Adventist Online

In the last year or 2 (jus my experience) I've seen a lot of drums used in the church for praise teams, and well pretty much anything else involving music. I have yet to see drums mentioned in the Bible. I've heard that instrument isn't mentioned there. I'm not sure but I believe Ellen White saw drums entering the church eventually too and wrote about that altho I couldn't find where right now. And I kno theres cultures out there who use them to summon spirits.. soo...yeah... lol. But does anyone else know anything around all this? Whats your take on it?

UPDATE (10/10 & 14/11): Over time I have learned a lot over the study of the Bible and SOP concerning the use of drums in the church. I don't want to make this reading extra long so I'll share some studies I have written it, with Scripture and SOP, as well as other sources with much even scientific evidence. God bless in your studies, and may we make the right decision.

Please friends, no more "I think", "I feel" answers. Lets study it out. I understand there will be disagreement, I've seen this in my journey to get an answer. We are Seventh-Day Adventists who seek citizenship in heaven! ...however :) That comes first, and heaven should be our culture. Lets be honest, sincere, and willing to look at the evidence. These are, after all, well learned Seventh-Day Adventists, who base what they will share on Scripture. After all, we too need to remember who we are.

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. - Proverbs 18:13 KJV

God bless.

Music Is Made a Snare

The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. . . . {LDE 159.1}
A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din and noise to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit's working. . . . Those things which have been in the past will be in the future. Satan will make music a snare by the way in which it is conducted.--2SM 36, 38 (1900). {LDE 159.2}
Let us give no place to strange exercisings, which really take the mind away from the deep movings of the Holy Spirit. God's work is ever characterized by calmness and dignity.--2SM 42 (1908). {LDE 159.3}

I bore my testimony, declaring that these fanatical movements, this din and noise, were inspired by the spirit of Satan, who was working miracles to deceive if possible the very elect.--Letter 132, 1900, pp. 5-8. (To Brother and Sister S. N. Haskell, October 10, 1900.)

[THESE COMMENTS WERE MADE IN CONNECTION WITH THE "HOLY FLESH" MOVEMENT AT THE INDIANA CAMP MEETING OF 1890. FOR FURTHER DETAILS, SEE SELECTED MESSAGES, BOOK 2, PP. 31-39.]

"They threw a party for the gods, and the gods came."

- Iyalorixa, Salvador, Bahia

In Yoruba religion, whether practiced in Ile Ife, Salvador, Bahia, La Habana or the Bronx, music and dance have always been central. They are the mediums which connect the physical world (aiye) of the living with the supernatural world (orun) of the gods (orisha) and ancestors (egun). Oriki - songs and praise poems to the orisha - act as activators, quickening the senses of the faithful and opening a pathway for the orishas' divine energy (ashe). Drumming helps shape the ceremony, channeling the orisha with their special rhythmic signatures, and dance, as John Mason puts it, "is the body's way of singing the praises of the orisha." These are the tools for summoning the orisha; invitations to a party held on their behalf.

Wow, this was actually all very helpful. I hadn't logged on in a while.. but in that time never really did find that answer. Had a feeln, but nothing more. Thanks.. good to have those sources.
"EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS REPORT THAT IN THEIR SERVICES THE FANATICS WORKED UP A HIGH PITCH OF EXCITEMENT BY USE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS ORGANS, FLUTES, FIDDLES, TAMBOURINES, HORNS, AND EVEN A BIG BASS DRUM"

2SM 31

If we are going to throw out drums ... we will also have to throw out Organs , Flutes, Horns and Violins.
No reason why not. Go for it Gabriel.
Hmm, I can see how instruments & other things can be used both inappropriately, then appropriate. Christian rock.. Is that us being molded/mixed stained by the world? I cannot see Elijah, or Moses taking part in such worship. I just don't see it. You did mention of course for youth gatherings and such, which may be different. I don' t know. Yes I can see how that would be fun and can get youth to come in and spend time around God's people and hopefully receive further light. I mean I don't see anything wrong with being energetic in worship and such.. I may be wrong, but it seems like we are sometimes trying to adapt our times and our likes to fit the Bible, not the other way around.

Thats a good point to bring up about the other instruments, someone below had mentioned about its how we use them... I wonder differently about drums because of the different things I've read now that do not support it.
No. I don't see Moses doing that. His culture and times were different.
Well, Israel was influenced by the nations around them many times. People like Moses, were not. He stayed away from what the other cultures did, whom happened to use drums in their worship (of Moloch and sure there are others) But,thats why I wonder, if now today, we are trying to use "times have changed" and go along w/ what the world is doing, like.. Israel made the mistake to do.

There is not much or anything about instruments in this scripture, but 1 Kings 18:20-39 you see a contrast between how God was called upon and how Baal was called upon. For Baal, it was.. chaotic sounding.. to me.. Elijah, humble and simple when it was his turn.. Guess who got results. I understand there is no evidence of drums in this passage, but it would not have surprised me by the events going on.
Jose I think they had larger issues than drums. As do we.
I agree, they did have bigger things to worry about.. And agree again in that we do too. I wondered because of the the frequency I was seeing it.
Maybe you should have stayed in South Lancaster..........like I did...........'nuff sed

What do you think of this article by Prof Jon Paulien, of Andrews Univ, Gabriel?

http://www.pathfinderclub.org/article/articleview/251/1/67/9/67/

You realise that you want to use those because you see that it is popular among persons of the world. Since God changes not neither does the way in which we worship Him should be changed. Been young and vibrant should not interfere with the proper worship of God.
