Should a Christian listen to secular music? Is listening to secular music harmful to a Christian? .

In the church manual it says that any music pertaining to rock, jazz or any hybrid forms should be shunned. Are there any Bible texts or biblical principles, or principles from the writings of Ellen White, to help us understand this issue of music?

Where do we stand on the issue of Music?

The Lure of Popular Music. --I feel alarmed as I witness everywhere the frivolity of young men and young women who profess to believe the truth. God does not seem to be in their thoughts. Their minds are filled with nonsense. Their conversation is only empty, vain talk. They have a keen ear for music, and Satan knows what organs to excite to animate, engross, and charm the mind so that Christ is not desired. The spiritual longings of the soul for divine knowledge, for a growth in grace, are wanting. I was shown that the youth must take a higher stand and make the word of God the man of their counsel and their guide. Solemn responsibilities rest upon the young, which they lightly regard. The introduction of music into their homes, instead of inciting to holiness and spirituality, has been the means of diverting their minds from the truth. Frivolous songs and the popular sheet music of the day seem congenial to their taste. The instruments of music have taken time which should have been devoted to prayer. Music, when not abused, is a great blessing; but when put to a wrong use, it is a terrible curse. It excites, but does not impart that strength and courage which the Christian can find only at the throne of grace while humbly making known his wants and, with strong cries and tears, pleading for heavenly strength to be fortified against the powerful temptations of the evil one. Satan is leading the young captive. Oh, what can I say to lead them to break his power of infatuation! He is a skilful charmer luring them on to perdition.

These last days music is too corrupted. Most artists have borrowed rock, hip-hop and amalgamated it with christianity.
The Bible clearly says in Romans 12:2 "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is his good and perfect will."
Rock and heavy metal music is assumed to be devil's music, hiphop is up there when it comes to secular music, so i don't understand why someone wants to copy what the world is doing and start gospel rock or even gospel hiphop.

Amos 6:5 "You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments."

It's evident that most of the musical instruments were just improvised, Adventist Home states that instruments should be in hands of expirenced individuals who are able to handle them with care.

Secular music as it goes, is entirely devilish, the devil controls the music industry don't forget that he was a singer and he still is and he knows how many can be led to hell by claiming to listening to love songs, rock, hiphop etc.
There's more love and songs of love in the bible. I think the music we have to listen to, is the kind of music which won't make our thoughts to wander not even a second, that we are strangers in this world with work to preach and hasten the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and go to Heaven and sing the Song of the Lamb.
Thanks Joseph for this information.... I know this will go a long way ...
What do you say to some one who offers this quote?

1 Corinthians 9:22 (KJV)
22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

This seems to be a verse used in arguments concerning Music to justify certain song styles. What would be the argument in this case? Does would this then mean it is ok to use certain genres of music as a witness, and still have the ability to avoid compromise, or does it just contradict itself? What context is this verse being used?

DJ, its funny, I asked this same question today in one of the music groups I joined. This is very interesting.
much of the research will said most type of musics pertaining to rock, jazz or any hybrid forms are really will have psychological effect of those heard it. it usually depends on the hearer whether to accept it or not.
I think any music is good as long as it is not degrading to anyone or carries negative messages!
Music is the universal language,it soothes ,it calms an irate person its just wonderful but who do we give honour to when we play and listen to music.Gospel hiphop, gospel rock and other forms of secular music have no part in the ear of SDA.
WHERE ARE ALL THE GREAT AND POPULAR CONTRIBUTERS.
I believe we should only listen to that which glorifies God. Music, like everything, can be used and abused.
I grew up in the church and i got baptised at the age of seventeen. I was taught not to listen to secular music. I love music and so i listen different types of music Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Smooth reggae (clean ones), and i have a special interest in old hits.

Now my view is that depending on the type of secular music you listen it can be harmful. Music is powerful, it can captivate ones mind leading into one having impure thoughts and feelings and sometimes it reflects in our actions. Music is very influential, very suggestive and can activate an individual mind and body resulting positively or negatively.

Being a christian must we must carefully analyze what we listen to. Listening to some of R. Kelly or dance Hall songs are a no-no for me. We are surrounded by all types of music but we have choices.

I see christian using some dance hall rythms as their back ground music at concerts and even at some youth services that i can't appreciate. To be honest is not every gospel music i see on the market i purchase.

I think that as a true child of God we should be guided by our christian princples and teachings and most importantly by the word of God in everything we do. Make our music collection clean, inspirational, pure and spiritual.

have a blessed day
WHEN I WAS GROWING UP IN THE 1980'S NOBODY AND I MEAN NOBODY COULD HAVE BAD MOUTHED MICHAEL JACKSON IN MY HEARING AND ESCAPED UNSCATHED. BUT AFTER COMING TO THE SAD REALISATION THAT HE WAS (AND PROBABLY STILL IS) A DEVIL WORSHIPPER MY WHOLE VIEW OF HIM CHANGED. REMEMBER TOO THAT HE IS NOT THE ONLY ARTISTE WHO WORSHIPS THE DEVIL. R KELLY'S 'I BELIEVEV I CAN FLY' WAS MY THEME SONG THROUGH A LEVELS. BUT SINCE HIS RUN INS WITH THE LAW AND PORN AND SO ON I DONT WANT TO HEAR HIM ANYMORE.

BUT AS FAR AS TYPES OF MUSIC IS CONCERNED, THINGS LIKE ROCK, HIP HOP, JAZZ AND SO ON R A DEFINITE NO NO. AGAIN YOU WILL NOT FIND ANY TEXT WHICH SAYS 'THOU SHALT NOT LISTEN TO..........' IN THE BIBLE. WE JUST HAV TO USE THE GUIDELINES AND THE BRAIN GOD GAVE US.

THERE ARE ALOT OF CROSSOVERS AROUND TODAY WHICH MAKE ME SICK. ALL MUSIC IS NOT GOOD. AND SINCE THE DEVIL WAS THE LEAD MUSICIAN IN HEAVEN B4 THE FALL HIS ABILITY TO ENSNARE US WITH MUSIC IS UNQUESTIONABLE. WE MUST 'GUARD THE AVENUES OF OUR SOULS' AND REMEMBER, "WHETHER THEREFORE YE EAT OR DRINK OR WHATSOEVER YE DO DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD."
Hey I appreciate your Comments God bless
i recently attended a youth camp for my church and this topic was brought up. the pastor said that it all depends on your reason for listening to music. music from the outside world can mislead you. one person asked if we should listen to Christian music that is said to have subordinate messages. the pastor replied that if we really wanted too, we could find subordinate messages in anything and everything and that it all went back to why u were listening to music. if u are doing it to praise God then its okay because you are focused on God and not the hidden messages that r there. in psalms it also says that we should praise with wind, percussion, and sting instruments as long as our sole reason for it is praising God. outside music, worldly music tends to distract us and set off our focus from God.
good pastor prescribing thorn to his sheep! the armagedom is coming soon!
peace
