BAN ON SALES OF ASSAULT WEAPONS TO CIVILIANS

Automatic or semi-automatic military-style weapons are becoming increasingly available to civilians. In some areas of the world it is relatively easy to acquire such guns. They show up not only in the street, but in the hands of youngsters at school. Many crimes are committed through the use of these kinds of weapons. They are made to kill people. They have no legitimate recreational use.

The teachings and example of Christ constitute the guide for the Christian today. Christ came into the world to save lives, not to destroy them (Luke 9:56). When Peter drew his weapon Jesus said to him: "Put your sword back in its place . . . All who take the sword will die by the sword" (Matt. 26:52 TEV). Jesus did not engage in violence.

The argument is made by some that banning assault weapons limits the rights of people and that guns do not commit crimes, but people do. While it is true that violence and criminal inclinations lead to guns, it is also true that availability of guns leads to violence. The opportunity for civilians to acquire by purchase or otherwise automatic or semi-automatic assault weapons only increases the number of deaths resulting from human crimes. Possession of guns by civilians in the United States has increased by an estimated 300 per cent in the past four years. During the same period there has been a staggering increase in armed attacks and resulting deaths.

In most of the world such weapons cannot be acquired by any legal means. The Church views with alarm the relative ease with which they may be acquired in some areas. Their availability can only open the possibility of further tragedies.

Pursuits of peace and the preservation of life are to be the goals of Christians. Evil cannot be effectively met with evil, but must be overcome with good. Seventh-day Adventists, with other people of good will, wish to cooperate in using every legitimate means of reducing, and eliminating where possible, the root causes of crime. In addition, with public safety and the value of human life in mind, the sale of automatic or semi-automatic assault weapons should be strictly controlled. This would reduce the use of weapons by mentally disturbed people and criminals, especially those involved in drug and gang activities.

This public statement was released by the General Conference president, Neal C. Wilson, after consultation with the 16 world vice presidents of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, on July 5, 1990, at the General Conference session in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Thx Shannon
Proud to be Adventist. This statement needs to be republished.
As full of inaccuracies as it is?

Shannon, You are not being honest, Citizens in the USA cannot buy military weapons that fire on automatic such as are used in the military.  I have as of yet to meet an Adventist who has an FFL license to buy or sell such a weapon so I do not think we have to worry about an Adventist pastor owning a browning automatic or an M16 with selective fire.   If you were speaking of handguns that are used in a majority of crimes your statement might be truer.  If you're an Adventist and are afraid of guns don't own one.  If the Holy Spirit tells you not to own a gun, don't.  Don't come on here and tell people what to do if you do not even know what you are talking about.  For example a long range bolt action firearm is more dangerous than a semiautomatic, but you would not have a clue what that means or why.  There are firearms with wood stocks and wooden handles  and some that are painted black with metal and plastic parts, they are the same firearm, the same gun, but one is considered an assault rifle because it looks "scary".   Again, this is total ignorance and fear mongering and a waste of time.  Sunday law and lawlessness are a greater danger to Sabbath keepers.  The majority of "guns" real assault weapons, tanks, howitzers, mortars, rockets, and grenades are owned by those who will enforce and persecute people who follow Jesus.  People who say not to own a gun because Jesus will protect them have a more valid argument than someone who is just following political man made nonsense such as what you and ZJ spew.

BTW, My church the SDA church also published "The Great Hope", Not real proud of that because it butchers the truth of what EGW has to say.

Shannon lives in California which is super violent. Guns are everywhere in Kennesaw, Georgia and we have no violent crime. In the wake of the shootings in Orlando, the LGBT are now buying guns since they realize that they need to protect themselves from the radical islamic extremists or other violent hate crimes.

That photo was taken in Los Angeles.

Very true.  Gay friends on Face Book were the first to say it was Islamic Fundamentalism and they wanted to shoot back. (Yes I have gay friends).   I do not agree with vengeance but, if people actually believed what the Bible has to say then they would believe the words of Jesus, "as in the days of Noah".  Man cannot fix this with statements by NAD, CIA, LBGTQ, FBI and all the other alphabet soup of acronyms or by laws made by mankind.  It is just going to happen and we need to be Godly and pray.

I believe in shooting back in self defense since I strongly believe in the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution. I believe what they are trying to say that they want to arm and protect themselves if they are victims of violence.

Gabriel , in very practical terms how exactly is guns used to protect you ?

Go and read on my initial post and compare to Australia's gun control. You will find the answer yourself.

When you slice potatoes how do you use a knife?

Ban Knives in OZ!?

Poignant final Facebook posts of British backpacker, 21, stabbed to death by French knifeman shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ in horrific rampage at Australian hostel

A BRITISH backpacker living her “dream” has been stabbed to death when a Frenchman shouting “Allahu Akbar” went on a rampage at a hostel in Australia.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, who had been working as a bartender for the past six months, was knifed in a frenzied attack in front of 30 horrified witnesses.

Another Brit, named locally as Tom Jackson, is fighting for his life in hospital after reports that he was stabbed up to 15 times.

Mia’s final Facebook posts show her enjoying her new life abroad as she declares she is “living my dream”.

Only weeks ago, the backpacker posted on Facebook: “The hardest thing living my dream, missing the important home things. Graduations, people in hospital, funerals and birthdays.”

Her mother responded: “You’ll be back in the blink of an eye, and we’ll all still be doing the same old stuff for the most part. Live your dream and know you’re in all our hearts.”

It has emerged the knifeman also stabbed a dog to death as he rampaged through a room of around 30 people on Tuesday night.

Cops have now arrested a 29-year-old man who they say screamed extremist Islamic prayers during the attack.

The stabbing took place at an accommodation complex in the Home Hill area of Queensland, at around 11.15pm local time on Tuesday.

I would say this, pray for your home and neighbors. God is the only defense.  Defend the weak from those who would harm them. Protect your family, Jesus would do no less.  If the government comes for you because you have broken the law, such as Sunday law then allow them to take you, Adventist are not like the Godless revolutionaries,  I think this is where Shannon and ZJ get all mixed up because they do not understand what God's true church is or the mission of the SDA church and they are in to leftist politics rather than trying to understand where we are at in the end times.  We are not to return evil for evil and we are to have a clear understand of events and history.  For example the deaths in Orlando were not caused by a "gun" they were caused by a sexually unhinged person with false religious beliefs who has probably contributed more to the election of Trump which are not liked by certain people who are on this thread. Instead of having a conversation about this and other end time events we have SDA hyperventilating about gun ownership, rather than taking the time to speak to people about end time events. BTW are you worried about vegan SDA's owning  assault rifles? The whole notion is kind of laughable to me, but I could be wrong.

Raymond you again attempting to undermine and slander people instead of dealing with the topic. In very practical terms how is the use of private owned and handled guns suppose to protect you ? Please answer that question without resorting to personally insulting others.
