Happy Sabbath Everyone! I just wrote a blog about my experience at a church I visited today, and I have some more questions. The church I was at today had a Baptist like atmosphere, with a choir, singing and dancing, and the congregation shouting during the pastor's sermon. My question is, is this ok? Or are they going against Ellen G. White's teaches? It was very interesting and shocking to me, because the other SDA church I visited was nothing like this.
I believe it was a Friday night. What I can remember, other than the location, is that the music was rather loud, yes drums were involved. Anyway, at the end of it all... the musicians stuck around just to hang out, as did others to talk. I don't believe there to be anything wrong w/ just that, people like to be social. I remember they would play again, rather loudly. It seemed like a social lounge or jam session or something rather than a place where God's people come to worship. I didn't think much of it back then but thinking of it now, I think thats rather very distracting and noisy. And I really do like music but it was jus way too much.
I am reminded of this:
Let all things be done decently and in order. | 1 Corinthians 14:40
____________
There was another church I went to, SDA, where people went in jeans, sandles, t-shirts. Even the preacher, once done, decided to get more comfortable in the church. Not every member at least half, possibly more. The feeling I got there was kinda strange. This was on a Sabbath morning. After, they had lunch near the back of the church and on the menu was much flesh foods.
I remember going to a Baptist church via a friend invitation where bacon was on the menu after their Sunday service. Both times I was rather, disappointed.
So, I ask myself, with some churches getting a little loose with their music, flesh based menus right in the church, and some other, I'll call it small, things here and there... is it hard to see that some churches (cuz everything starts small and slowly) are drifting out of principles once held on to faithfully? Isn't the line that shows the difference between our remnant church, and every other church supposed to be a clear and easy to see line? Instead of a blurry one where sometimes this sometimes that is ok?
Again, from my own personal experience, which I have shared a little now, it is few the times that I have seen questionable things... I am glad its been few but I know there is supposed to be shakings coming our way, and I know many will leave our ranks, so it will not surprise me to see more and more questionable things... and see them more daring too, but so far, its a few things such as these, which I myself have seen.
I got an extra ticket to see the game
Gonna watch a little basketball
I called up my neighbor, Hey Flo, I said
Now do you want to tag along
Well we got to the game and the crowd's going wild
But Flo just kind of sat and smiled
I wondered if she'd ever
Let her feelings show
She said Child I'm glad you invited me
I'm really having lots of fun
But next week I'll take you to the place I know
That really makes my motor run
I know you're probably thinking
I'm a boring old lady
And Child that may be so
When I found something to shout about you'll know
The next week we went together to church
she couldn't wait to get inside
Started clapping along with the opening song
gave the organist a big high 5
When the preacher said Jesus saves
Flo's row started the wave
laughing and rejoicing like I'd never seen before
Then they filled the tank and sinner sank
Flo's a crying joyfully
They sure can play at the old ball game
But that's the kind of dunk for me
I know you're probably thinking I'm a crazy old lady
Child that may be so
But I've found something to shout about you know
Lately I've been thinking about my days with Flo
You know the lady's quite profound
When it comes to cheering on a superstar
I've really got it turned around
At the stadium I scream and yell
I'm so happy when the team does well
But when the preacher mentions Heaven
I barely make a sound
Well I'm not saying that it's all wrong
To root for the millionaires
But I think I'm gonna save my greatest praise
For the one I know who really cares
I know you're probably thinking
I'm a little bit crazy
But I don't think that's so
I've found Someone to shout about you know
Jesus is someone to shout about you know
I don't know how big Mr Houghtaling's range is, but he's very popular here in Michigan; and this song is a great example of why cheering and singing in church is a great idea. My only concern is, how open and honest are the people in the service? Do they look like they're putting on a production or are they being honest and open for their love of Jesus? Go where you're comfortable, but be opened minded. You might be missing out on a great (and rare) opportunity to PRAISE Him ACTIVELY with other members who are actually quite sincere. And don't forget to pray about any concerns you might have; He'll let you know where He wants you. Hope this helped.
the SDA church teach just this:

It's important to NOT expect entertainment at worship!
So often the expression at worship is planned and/or provoked to create an atmosphere rather then a response to the Holy Spirit. It's important to realize "expression is not worship"! If done "decent and in order" it is permissible.
We are really going to worship God and expect to meet Him there, not for our own enjoyment.
We have MUCH to learn from churches such as Baptists. Much to learn. But we are often so full of ourselves and our TRUTH ... that we forget the more important things such as love and helping our neighbor.
