Are we gods?

Psalm 82:6 "I have said, Ye are gods, and  all of you are children of the most High."

What do we understand "ye are gods."

Judges

Tell me more Jason. I'm in a discussions with some atheist that use this for we are gods.

Yes a puzzling text here Benecio

This psalm calls the rulers and judges of Israel "gods" and "children of the Most High." They were called gods because they represented God in executing judgment. Joh_10:34-36 records Jesus using this passage to defend his claims to be God. His argument was as follows: If God would call mere people "gods," why was it blasphemous for him, the true Son of God, to declare himself equal with God?

God said - I have given you my name and power to rule your people in my stead. All - Not only the rulers of Israel, but of all other nations. Children - Representing my person, and bearing both my name and authority. “I have said, ye are gods.” The greatest honor was thus put upon them; they were delegated gods, clothed for a while with a little of that authority by which the Lord judges among the sons of men.

Bur arguing with an infidel is not always easy.

Thanks Elijah God bless

NICE.  BUT ALSO, IN MANY PLACES THROUGH OUT THE BIBLE, GOD AND MEN REFER TO "OTHER GODS", "FALSE GODS".    AND OF COURSE THERE IS ALSO REFERENCE TO THE "TRUE GOD AND LIVING GOD".  SO SOMETIMES "GOD" IS USED LOOSELY AND SATIRICALLY SUCH AS ELIJAH DID WHEN SAYING THAT MAYBE THEIR "GOD" WAS ASLEEP OR HAVING A BM.

Benicio,

Another rendering is found in the JPS Tanakh bible and it says,

I said: Ye are godlike beings, And all of you sons of the Most High.

I think this is shown in several scriptures as in Gen. 1:26

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…

Mankind is made in the image and likeness of God, but men are not Gods.

Again, we see this also in Ps.8:5

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and splendour.

Some bibles say God, Elohim, Godhead or heavenly beings.

As human being, we have godlike qualities. We have a mind, and the ability create that which we desire, we have a human spirit in us (Zech. 12:1, Job 32:8). We are thinking being, we make choices and we have the capacity to love and to forgive.

Other creatures act out of instinct, human being do not. In this way we are indeed godlike. Man is as god, but man is not a God.

The Chapter itself is related to judges.  In Leviticus 19:15 God sets the standard for judges

14 'You shall not curse a deaf man, nor place a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall revere your God; I am the LORD. 15 'You shall do no injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor nor defer to the great, but you are to judge your neighbor fairly. 16  'You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people, and you are not to act against the life of your neighbor; I am the LORD.

Men given this high task should judge this way, but as human being, we make judgment everyday in our own sphere of our world, and we are judge righteous; do to other as you want done to you.

We have godlike qualities, we are gods in that sense, and we have the potential to becomes sons of God by the resurrection, but as it read.

Nevertheless ye shall die like men, And fall like one of the princes (I’m assuming, the fallen angels).

We all will die like the mortals we are.

Hope this help!

Gene Thanks God bless

Exo 22:28  Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.

he Apostle Paul applies it to the high priest among the Jews, who was the ruler in sacred things, Acts 23:5

Paul replied, "Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: 'Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.'" Acts 23:5

The 'gods' being the civil magistrates, the judges of the land, and the like, while the 'rulers of thy people' can refer to  civil or ecclesiastic

Thank you Jason God bless.
