Hi there,

Im curious about the habits you have and your opinions about what to do and not to do on Sabbath.

Some people have no problem with cooking, shopping, cleaning the house while others will wait until sunset. Some people play sports some people dont.

I am one of those who rather wait or prepare everything before the sabbath starts.

What do you think should and should not people do on sabbath?

Do you think people now do activities they wouldnt do few years ago?

i didnt mean to ask what should i do because i am trying to do what i think god wants me to do on sabbath. i just wanted to know how other people spend sabbaths :)
I do what God taught the Israelites to do. I do all my cooking and cleaning before sundown on Fridays, I don't shop during the Sabbath, and I try to stay away from conversations that would normally take place during the week. The Sabbath is God's day. It's a day where all our time, focus and energy should be spent on Him. It's a day of praise, worship, meditation and learning (among other things). You should search the scriptures for you're answer though. It has a lot to say about the Sabbath. :)
Great question, Veronika!

Veronika, Mark is right. Pray about it and use your common sense when keeping the Sabbath. Each person keep Sabbath differently.

Amen!

There are many statements and quotes from the Bible & Spirit of Prophecy that could be posted on this subject. But the best quote that comes to my mind is the one below. This quote, along with Exodus 20:8-11, summarizes the whole matter on how Sabbath should be kept. Since we repeat Ex. 20:8-11 every week on Sabbath's at church, I will not post it (since it should be memorized:)  Here is a statement from "Counsels For The Church, pg. 269.

SOP says,

"The words and thoughts should be guarded. Those who discuss business matters and lay plans on the Sabbath, are regarded of God as though they engaged in the actual transaction of business. To keep the Sabbath holy, we should not even allow our minds to dwell upon things of a worldly character" {Counsels for the Church, p. 269}"

...Our total focus should be on Christ.

I agree with keeping our focus on Jesus on the Sabbath, whatever we choose to do on the Sabbath, if  He is the center of our attention I believe He will direct us to making the best choices of activities.  Personally, my activities vary from Sabbath to Sabbath, whether it be door to door, visiting friends, a nature walk, the nursing home, family worship at home or just some quiet study time, I always feel blessed.

God bless!

Sleeping in the afternoon is always a good thing in my opinion. Recharge your batteries as Sabbath Morning and Evening can be packed was activities and as soon as sunset hits the cleaning, shopping , cooking etc starts.

Let us be careful of "doing our own thing" on the Sabbath day. It is just 24 out of 168 hours to fully reflect on Christ.

And let us be careful that we do not speak about worldly matters that would draw our minds away from Christ. We have 6 days to do these things. Let our conversation be on holy matters.

Also, let us not allow the little children to break the Sabbath. We must remember that they are setting habits at an early age. We should teach them to observe the Sabbath by using object lessons that they will come to enjoy.

Finally, let us be careful that we do not 'sleep away' the Sabbath. I have found myself to do that from time to time. Too much sleep on the Sabbath is "doing your own pleasure" on the Sabbath.

Instead, let us study God's Word, go deeper in prayer, spend time in nature, go witnessing, and do things that will build up God's Kingdom.

The Bible says,

*Isaish 58:13-14 says,

"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it."

SOP says,

The fourth commandment is virtually transgressed by conversing upon worldly things or by engaging in light and trifling conversation.  Talking upon anything or everything which may come into the mind is speaking our own words.  Every deviation from right brings us into bondage and condemnation” (2T 703).

“None should feel at liberty to spend sanctified time in an unprofitable manner.  It is displeasing to God for Sabbathkeepers to sleep during much of the Sabbath” (2T 704).

"Parents, above every thing, take care of your children upon the Sabbath. Do not suffer [allow] them to violate God's holy day by playing in the house or out of doors. You may just as well break the Sabbath yourselves as to let your children do it, and when you suffer your children to wander about, and suffer them to play upon the Sabbath, God looks upon you as Sabbath-breakers" (R&H 1854-09-19).

I'm not staying a wake for 24hour. That is sleep deprivation which is not good for you.
Zoe, lol, come on, he meant during the day
Well he should have said. This is what I read "Let us be careful of "doing our own thing" on the Sabbath day...Too much sleep on the Sabbath is "doing your own pleasure". How does one go about measuring this? 6 days a week I deprive myself of  an afternoon nap and on some Sabbaths I am bless to be able to squeeze it in now and again.
