18. The Gift of Prophecy
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying
mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G.
White. As the Lord’s messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative
source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction,
and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard
by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts
2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)

Rev.   12:17 .... the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

If EGW has the testimony of Jesus, then she is among God's remnant people. But her gift does not make the whole SDA church the remnant.  All who are of the remnant must have the testimony of Jesus, themselves.

Ez.  14:20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, [were] in it, [as] I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall [but] deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

Here is the promise:

Acts  2:37  .... Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?

2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

All flesh, not just EGW's flesh.  This Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Prophecy, which enables you to prophesy, and testify of Jesus:

1 Cor.  12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and [that] no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

The gift of the Holy Ghost comes through preaching, or prophesying, which makes Jesus known.  EGW is not the only one who can give you this:

Romans  10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Gal. 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

2 Tim.  4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

You don't have to be prophets to prophesy:

1 Sam.  19:20  ...the spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied

19:21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.

1 Cor.  14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or [one] unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on [his] face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

But, you would be acting the part of prophets, at least temporarily:

Num.  11:25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that [was] upon him, and gave [it] unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, [that], when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

11:29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, [and] that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

In addressing John, the angel is telling us what we must do.

Rev. 10:11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Matt. 10:32  Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

Wow you cover this truth so well

especially love the text

11:29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, [and] that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

Everyone in the 144,000 are specially endowed with the Holy Spirit are prophets...a prophet is a person who witnesses to others of Jesus,....some might be chosen to receive visions....but all of them witness they have experienced Jesus personally in their lives

We might be the end time movement, and with and end time prophet...but we do not become the remnant until the shaking removes all the tares and "that which remains" ie a "remnant" continues to witness they have seen Jesus

The remnant are those who remain faithful.  When the call comes to "be zealous and repent", they will be manifesting zeal and repentance, while the rest glory in their wealth of knowledge, thinking they're rich, not realizing it's only inflated currency.

Kings used to melt down their gold coins, add base metal, and remake the coins to increase the money supply.  When tried in the fire, they are found worth much less than supposed. Likewise, our leaders have supposed to add to our knowledge by their own many rules, and statements, and theories, and endless books, supporting their ideology, yet nothing calling us to repentance, and nothing rebuking this apostasy.  Everything appears as though we have evolved greatly beyond the simplicity of the early church.

2 Cor.  11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or [if] ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [him].

"When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God; and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the secular power." {GC 443.2}

"The General Conference takes the general supervision of the work in all its branches ... And the church is a body of Christians associated together with the simple covenant to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus." The Review and heralld. Vol. 57, No. 1

Have we departed from that simplicity?  Have we broken that covenant?  Have we put our founding fathers to shame?  Have we disfellowshipped those who still have that simple covenant?

I couldn't agree more with you Rush, the simplicity of loving Jesus is all that matters, indeed if you have a look at my website Spiritual Springs, the bulk of the  webpages talk about the steps to Jesus, how to have a deeper relationship with Him, and reflect the lovely character of Jesus...  Have a look at how we are saved daily by Jesus.

Of the 1100 webpages so far, there is little on Sabbath, Second Coming, and only 20 webpages devoted to proving Ellen White messages were inspired. Nothing on the health message, baptism, mark of the beast or the end of time prophecies...Most people assume if they are baptised and talk to Jesus occasionally then they know Him and He knows them....I wonder if it is as lacking as that ?

If I had to simplify the daily steps to Jesus as outlined in the moral code, they would be

(1) Willing to let Jesus in daily into your mind.

(2) Be humble reading His words daily.

(3) Be meek using His powerful Name in prayer power.

(4) Share your love fruits with others as God makes you fruitful .

Pretty simple, .... this is the first four of the ten commandments written in beatitude form.

Micah  6:8 He hath showed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

That's justice, mercy, and faith.

Matt. 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

I would say Rush these requirements are summary for after you are saved by Jesus...

Ho 14:1 ¶ O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

your will, to be willing to let your Saviour save you, knowing your guilty of sin

2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD:

Read Jesus words and repent (turn) homeward to Jesus (this remove pride and causes humility)

say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously:

Pray to Jesus saying to remove our guilt and give us your grace

so will we render the calves of our lips.

Share the fruit of our lips, with others...

Notice the beatitudes

(1) The humble in spirit

(2) Those mourn the lost covering in humility

(3) The meek pray

(4) The hungry and thirsty share

(5) Show mercy to families

(6) Be pure with life

(7) Be a relationship maker not a relationship breaker

(8) Protect the right things even if persecuted

(9) Preserve truth even if people revile you

(10) Be salt. Be a light.

Doing justly is following the beatitude 8 and 9, and mercy is 6 showing kindness to families of organizations and humble is beatitudes 1 and 2

If you receive love from GOD, by doing the first four of the moral code, or the first four of the beatitudes, or the total steps to daily salvation (willing, taking words, talking words and sharing fruits) THEN you are ready to given away that love is the last six as service to others.

The texts you show are a summary of the entire 10, showing highlights a important ones.

Just a humble opinion trying to bring all texts into harmony....

Otherwise one could say love God and love your we have only two.

I find there is four to receiving love and six to giving away that love.

Hope this helps

I just meant to point out the "weightier matters of the law" was in that famous verse, which is also a Scripture Song.  I just recently realized that.

Can you amplify,"have we disfellowshipped those who still have that simple covenant?"
What do u mean, give examples if you may.

No connection there

Please elaborate.

sorry wrong thread. I have not read this one. My response above was for the Sanctified Rebellion

i have to say this

i have witnessed in four churches personally thru the years

and friends of these people (that's how i know!)

that told me this...

in personal one on one studying with the minister (four different good outstanding SDA Ministers)

there were baptized not knowing of EGW at the least

and only knowing a lil bit at the most

being hurried into baptisms there was no mention whats so ever as a requirement

my own first Baptism Certificate of Northern CA Conference on May 1st 1976

( i was a wee bity thing)

emphasized no coffee no booze and no unclean animals

nothing i recall in way of SOP

(thank goodness it said nothing about homosexuality or hair curlers)

and to boot when my gay christian buddy got baptized way back in 1990

there was no mention of NO COFFEEEEE!

#signs of the times

I wonder what John The Baptists asked the people when they came to be baptized. I'm sure Starbucks and homosexual behavior, smoking, etc. were not high on the list. I've said it before, baptism is not graduation, it's a new beginning with Christ. The gift of the holy spirit aids in our ability to overcome sin.

We are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy spirit. Not Ellen White. No one should be told what they have to believe. Beliving is between you and God.

The major question is, are we baptized into the SDA church( club )or Jesus Christ (spirit )

Personally I believe a person should repent, for the remission of sin, and be baptized as a public

declaration of there love for Christ, that's your salvation. I don't believe being a SDA is going to save me.
