We Adventist say that we are the true church because we keep the commandments of God and have the Testimony of Jesus which is the Spirit of Prophecy. What exactly is the spirit of prophecy? Some seemed to think it's E G White writings. I thought it was testifying about Jesus.

Revelation 12:7 “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

POINT:  The remnant church has the testimony of Jesus Christ.

But what is the testimony of Jesus Christ?

John in vision attempts to worship an angel and note the response.  Revelation 19:10 “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

POINT:  Note the angel said he had the testimony.  He didn’t say that he testifies of Jesus.  He says he has, he possesses, the testimony.  Then he says the testimony that he possesses is the Spirit of Prophecy.

For further clarification, Revelation 22:8,9 “And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.”

POINT :  John is caught up in vision and mistakenly attempts again to worship the angel.  The angel again reproves him but says that he is his fellowservant of his brethren the prophets.  Previously he said he had the testimony of Jesus Christ.  Now he says he’s a prophet.  So a prophet is someone that possesses the testimony of Jesus Christ.  The testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of Prophecy or the gift from the Holy Spirit to prophesy.

Hope it helped.  God Bless.

Great post Noel, maybe we should tack on the end that EG White is the Prophet to the SDA church. Although I know some rejects her.

Thank you Noel.

I like the explanations.

Perhaps an additional component is found in 1Peter, which speaks about the Pre-Advent prophets.

Those prophets were "searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it [the Spirit of Christ] testified beforehand [about] the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow." (1Pet 1:11)

So it was the Spirit of Christ that was testifying in the prophets. Their words were always the testimony of Jesus.

Jemma, I'm wondering if this might be useful. If I remember rightly, there are dozens of comments contained in Mrs. White's writings similar to these:

(It seems quite clear to me that Ellen White viewed the "spirit of prophecy" as something that extended far beyond her own work, and I think this represents the SDA view on this point... at least the early SDA view.)

"Silas, Paul’s companion in labor, was a tried worker, gifted with the spirit of prophecy..." (AA p.203)

"...God, by the spirit of prophecy, elevated the mind of Jacob above his natural feelings. In his last hours, angels were all around him, and the power of the grace of God shone upon him." (1SP p.156)

"Enoch faithfully rehearsed to the people all that God had revealed to him by the spirit of prophecy. Some believed his words..." (1SP p.62)

The "spirit of prophecy" is that Divine gift which allows a person to "see" beyond human limitations.

Yes Stewart great point a do agree and soon we may experience that indeed. This video Jemma speaks of a prophecy in which GOD cleanses the sanctuary in 1844 with a prophet also to ensure this last message gets out into the world...all of God's Bible messages had prophets...

Correct the spirit of prophecy is a person who gives actual witness of GOD speaking to them....

The term must be a witness---see and hear and speak to God directly.....not a person who experiences a who hears and speaks and listens to God talk to them visions...or audibly face to face....a prophet is such a person....

Paul was a witness...that's why Jesus had to appear to him directly and personally

Peter was a witness...called to see Jesus

James was a witness....

And Ellen White was also a witness...who heard and spoke to GOD face to face in visions

Watch the explains our role as a unique people of GOD...including an end of time prophet...

i don,t agree with this statement that seems to sagest that EGW alone has the SOP seeing that witness also means having experienced something ,in which case I FEEL THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE LOVE OF JESUS THE CHRIST IN MY LIFE & CHOOSE TO SPREAD THAT EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS i also believe i have the SOP :)

Noel, you are correct the SOP is the testimony of Jesus. Yet, many SDA's supplant this belief with the ministry of Ellen White asserting that she is the one true prophet and her work is called the SOP. Many SDA's will provide significant subterfuge in order to obscure this fact. Ellen Whites work is fine as a commentary which people are free to disagree with. Yet when she is elevated to equivalency with Christ then it is wrong and equivalent to idolatry.

Mr. Bryan, I agree with you that we do often refer to Ellen White’s writings as The Spirit of Prophecy.  I believe this is simply to not repeatedly say “Ellen White said,” which could be misinterpreted to say we’re placing her, the woman, on equal ground as God.  Therefore it’s often said “The Spirit of Prophecy” says, giving the glory to the Holy Spirit, not Ellen White.  Once again I don’t think the intention is to say Ellen is the only individual with the spirit of prophecy, yet I agree that some may draw that conclusion from the statement.

I, personally, do not like to say “the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy” because this wording can create a separation, that Ellen had the spirit of prophecy and maybe the Bible didn’t.  I would simply say the Bible and the writings of Ellen White, for they both are the spirit of prophecy.  So we agree there.

However I disagree with your statement “Ellen Whites work is fine as a commentary which people are free to disagree with.”  I disagree because this is based fully on whether you believe Ellen White is a prophet or not.  If you believe she is a true prophet, possessing the spirit of prophecy, then you cannot disagree with her writings to the church.

Ezekiel 3:4,10,11,27 “And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.

10 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.

POINT: God spoke to His prophet Ezekiel, giving him a message for Israel.  However note that God said the words that Ezekiel would speak would be credited as God’s own words.

11 And go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy people, and speak unto them, and tell them, Thus saith the Lord God;

POINT: After God has communicated His Word to His prophet, the prophet is now to present the same message to the larger group. Note that the prophet is only the messenger.  His message is “thus saith the Lord” or the Word of God.

27 But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God;”

POINT:  God further states that when the prophet speaks, it is God who opens His mouth and enables him to deliver the message.

Consider Numbers 22:38 “And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

POINT: We know that Balaam was here attempting to curse Israel, yet he admitted that as a prophet, he could only say the message God gave to him.  It is important for us to realize that when prophets speak it is God that is enabling them to speak.  Prophets become the mouth or mouthpiece of God.

Therefore when Ellen White speaks to the church in her role as a prophet we are not at liberty to disagree because we would then be disagreeing with the words of God, not the words of Ellen White.

Therefore the only question is, “Was Ellen White a true prophet?”  If she was then we listen to the “Thus saith the Lord.”  If not then we should not only disagree but reject her.  But in my life it has been repeatedly confirmed that she is indeed a true prophet.

God Bless.  Sorry if the post was too long.

She never claimed the title of prophet. When I was young the term was never used, only in resent years have I heard her referred to as a prophet.

True Prophets DO NOT CALL THEMSELVES PROPHETS. Ellen White did not but her writings and the things she prophesied proved that she was a prophet of God. She definitely had the gift of prophecy and who gives it? The Holy Spirit. Spirit of prophecy = gift of prophecy cannot see any difference. So when revelation 19:10 says the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy, all God is saying here is that I have endowed this Church with the Gift of prophecy. Hope this helps brother Keith.

Lameck where did you get the idea that true prophets don't call themselves prophets. There are many of Gods servants who identified themselves as Prophets
