In a recent discussion with a disgruntled Adventist, I was told that many in the church treat Ellen White like the Catholics treat the Virgin Mary...

It made me think... Could it be that some hold the same view?

 This was just a thrust by someone who disdains the gift of the SOP. Any time the counsel and warnings that cut across their life is stated they resort to claiming that SDAs worship the messenger.

This person refuses to accept that the message of the Testimony of Jesus came from Jesus through dreams and visions.

As long as they can make this all about the message they can down play and essentially ignore the message itself.

Imagine if for instance before the Scriptures were written down that when someone repeated the message from God through Moses the people said that to accept the message was to worship Moses. This some did and said that Moses was the problem when it was that they had a problem with God's message. Nothing has changed.

I think we need to decide if a person is a true prophet or a false prophet. If we accept that they are a true prophet then we ought to accept the true prophet's message as from God and not claim that to do so is worshiping the prophet.

We can not have it both ways.

Not a hard transition for a Catholic to make.  The scripture holds little if any mean compared to Saints, catechism, and tradition. Therefore you have an avenue to deify Ellen White and replace Mary with her.  Then the complete disregard to scripture in favor of Ellen White's writing make a handy substitute for catechism.  Then the concept of abject obedience with a works based salvation ethic, is an easy referral to the rites of the Church being the only method of salvation.

Catholicism leaves a lasting psychic imprint that is hard to shake.

  The problem is that lifelong SDAs often despise the gift and therefore compare it to Mary. If they were honest about it they would simply leave the church. Intellectually they cannot do that but their heart is far from God.If their heart was right with God they would not find a way to dismiss the SOP at every turn and they would not call it the woman but rather just what it is," the Testimony of Jesus." These people are Kenneth Copeland type pentecostals. They are about feelings  and rebellion. They will leave us soon. It is too bad they spit on the Testimony of Jesus when others support it.

Some people I know spend a majority of their time reading EGW and very little time studying the scriptures. I do believe some do esteem EGW as a catholic sees Mary.

But Mary didn't write a bunch of books that we can use to rebuke each other with.

Ouch rush4hire. So true.

There i nothing quite like an Ellen White spanking delivered by a well meaning brother.

The 2nd word in the 3rd sentence in my previous post should read "is". My bad.

Randy, I've done that a few times myself and am trying to correct that with more time in scripture. I don't want an Ellen White statue in my house.

Any spanking done to save people is good. It has nothing to do with Ellen.

True.  Where would be the attempt to force acts of contrition with out that?  LOL

Some feel rebuked because they accept not the counsel. The liberals sure despise reproof. The counsel is meant to cut as well as up lift. The problem is that our rebellious brethren want to be petted.

Your words tell a lot about the law you live under. The truth shall set you free.

Are you suggesting that we are free from the counsels given by Sister White?

"There are some professed believers who accept certain portions of the Testimonies as the message of God, while they reject those portions that condemn their favorite indulgences.  Such persons are working contrary to their own welfare and the welfare of the church.  It is essential that we walk in the light while we have the light."

"In many cases the Testimonies are fully received, the sin and indulgence broken off, and reformation at once commences in harmony with the light God has given. In other instances sinful indulgences are cherished, the Testimonies are rejected, and many excuses which are untrue are offered to others as the reason for refusing to receive them. The true reason is not given. It is a lack of moral courage—a will, strengthened and controlled by the Spirit of God, to renounce hurtful habits. {CCh 93.3}
Satan has ability to suggest doubts and to devise objections to the pointed testimony that God sends, and many think it a virtue, a mark of intelligence in them, to be unbelieving and to question and quibble. Those who desire to doubt will have plenty of room. God does not propose to remove all occasion for unbelief. He gives evidence, which must be carefully investigated with a humble mind and a teachable spirit, and all should decide from the weight of evidence. God gives sufficient evidence for the candid mind to believe; but he who turns from the weight of evidence because there are a few things which he cannot make plain to his finite understanding will be left in the cold, chilling atmosphere of unbelief and questioning doubts, and will make shipwreck of faith. {CCh 93.4}
It is Satan's plan to weaken the faith of God's people in the Testimonies. Satan knows how to make his attacks. He works upon minds to excite jealousy and dissatisfaction toward those at the head of the work. The gifts are next questioned; then, of course, they have but little weight, and instruction given through vision is disregarded. Next follows skepticism in regard to the vital points of our faith, the pillars of our position, then doubt as to the Holy Scriptures, and then the downward march to perdition. When the Testimonies, which were once believed, are doubted and given up, Satan knows the deceived ones will not stop at this; and he redoubles his efforts till he launches them into open rebellion, which becomes incurable and ends in destruction. By giving place to doubts and unbelief in regard to the work of God, and by cherishing feelings of distrust and cruel jealousies, they are preparing themselves for complete deception. They rise up with bitter feelings against the ones who dare to speak of their errors and reprove their sins. It is not alone those who openly reject the Testimonies, or who cherish doubt concerning them, that are on dangerous ground. To disregard light is to reject it. If you lose confidence in the Testimonies you will drift away from Bible truth. I have been fearful that many would take a questioning, doubting position, and in my distress for your souls I would warn you. How many will heed the warning?" {CCh 94.3}
