The Health Message is apart of the 3 Angels Messages. It is the "right arm" of the 3 Angels Message, which is the Everlasting Gospel. The Health Message is particularly connected to the 1st Angels Message, which tells us to "GIVE GLORY TO GOD". We give glory to God by reflecting His character and following His ways.

*Revelation 14:6,7---"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

7Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."

...We give "GLORY TO GOD" by reflecting His character and following His ways. We also give "GLORY TO GOD" in how we look, dress, eat, and drink. 1 Corinthians 10:31 makes this more clear.

*1 Corinthians 10:31---"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."

...This is how the Health Message is connected to the 3 Angels Message, through the announcement of the 1st Angel, which is to GIVE GOD GLORY. We give God glory in ALL that we do, including "eating & drinking". This is why God gave His last day church the HEALTH MESSAGE. We are told that meat eating should be done away with and that we (SDA's) should NOT eat cheese or other dairy products. Most of us agree on meat-eating. But many of us have not seen the light on eating dairy products (cheese, eggs, milk, butter, cream).

The SOP says,

  • Pure Vegetarianism/Veganism

1868 "Cheese should never be introduced into the stomach." 2T 68

1883 "All the elements of nutrition are contained in the fruits, vegetables, and grains." HL 96

1889 "Years ago I had a testimony of reproof for the managers in our campmeetings bringing upon the ground and selling to our people cheese and other hurtful things." CD 329

1890 "The effect of cheese is deleterious." CH 114

1896 "The simple grains, fruits of the trees, and vegetables have all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood." HL 98

1898 "In a short time the milk of the cows will also be excluded from the diet of God's commandment-keeping people in a short time it will not be safe to use anything that comes from the animal creation." CD 411

1899 "The light given me is that it will not be very long before we shall have to give up using any animal food. Even milk will have to be discarded." CD 384

1901 "The time may come when it will not be safe to use milk.... The time will come when we may have to discard some of the articles of diet we now use, such as milk and cream and eggs.... The time will come when milk cannot be used as freely as it is now used.... But I wish to say that when the time comes that it is no longer safe to use milk, cream, butter, and eggs, God will reveal this.... We see that cattle are becoming greatly diseased, the earth itself is corrupted, and we know that the time will come when it will not be best to use milk and eggs." CD 357-9

1902 "Let the diet reform be progressive. Let the people be taught how to prepare food without the use of milk or butter. Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men." 7T135

1903 "Vegetables, fruits, and grains should compose our diet. Not an ounce of flesh meat should enter our stomachs." CD 380

1905 "Cheese is... objectionable; it is wholly unfit for food." MH 302

1905 "Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator.... The grains, with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain ALL the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood.... The diet reform should be progressive. As disease in animals increases, the use of milk and eggs will become more and more unsafe... The people everywhere should be taught how to cook without milk and eggs, so far as possible, and yet have their food wholesome and palatable." MH 296, 316, 320-1

1906 "In grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts are to be found ALL the food elements that we need." CDF 92, 310, 313

1909 "The time will come when we may have to discard some of the articles of diet we now use, such as milk and cream and eggs..." 9T162

"Let the diet reform be progressive. Let the people be taught how to prepare food without the use of milk or butter. Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men. The time is near when, because of the iniquity of the fallen race, the whole animal creation will groan under the diseases that curse our earth. God will give His people ability and tact to prepare wholesome food without these things. Let our people discard all unwholesome recipes. Let them learn how to live healthfully, teaching to others what they have learned. Let them impart this knowledge as they would Bible instruction. Let them teach the people to preserve the health and increase the strength by avoiding the large amount of cooking that has filled the world with chronic invalids. By precept and example make it plain that the food which God gave Adam in his sinless state is the best for man's use as he seeks to regain that sinless state{CD 460.5}"

...The last few words in the Counsels of Diet and Foods appendix, are those of James White regarding the counsels on health given to his wife: "...all changes in diet should be made carefully, one at a time. And while she [his wife, Ellen White] would say this to those who are in danger of making changes too rapidly, she would also say to the tardy, Be sure and not forget to change."

*Scripture says that you are to “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

It is my hope and prayer that you will do just that.

 3. God’s Ideal for His People: Adventists have taken seriously the law of clean and unclean animals as representing the minimum the Lord requires from us concerning proper diet. We submit to it in grateful obedience to His will because it expresses His loving interest in our physical and spiritual well-being. By taking proper care of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit, we glorify God. Biblical evidence has led Adventists to conclude that vegetarianism is God’s ideal for His people. Such an ideal is very relevant in a world that is slowly realizing the tremendous benefits of such a diet.
Vegetarianism is on the rise around the world for a variety of reasons: ethical, ecological, religious, even narcissistic. This may be the proper time to reaffirm that ideal and avoid the use of meat in official meetings of the church (potlucks, workers’ meetings, etc.) and, whenever possible, by excluding it from our kitchens.
This I write to you that “you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well” (3 John 2, NIV).

--- very much agree!

Hi Reya, grace and peace.

Health Reformer, March, 1878      52. A large proportion of all the infirmities that afflict the human family, are the results of their own wrong habits, because of their willing ignorance, or of their disregard of the light which God has given in relation to the laws of their being. It is not possible for us to glorify God while living in violation of the laws of life. The heart cannot possibly maintain consecration to God while lustful appetite is indulged. A diseased body and disordered intellect, because of continual indulgence in hurtful lust, make sanctification of the body and spirit impossible. The apostle understood the importance of the healthful conditions of the body for the successful perfection of Christian character. He says, "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." He mentions the fruit of the Spirit, among which is temperance. "They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts."      [IMPOSSIBILITY OF ATTAINING CHRISTIAN PERFECTION WHILE GIVING REINS TO APPETITE--356]  {CD 44.2}

Is eating animal and animal products, that are diseased, medication ridden (Pharma = sourcery/witchcraft), full of harmful cholesterol, overtly expensive, difficult to digest etc etc etc, good for us???

If Scripture tells us that to pollute (defile) your body (temple) means that God will destroy us, and Scripture does tell us this...

1 Corinthians 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.

....and it is glaringly obvious, that flesh products, today, are harmful, then I would suggest to you...

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.

If, however you live where you have your own healthy animals, the use of their by-products are not as harmful than if you live in western cultures such as Europe or USA.

However, cheese is an abomination, Sister White tells us. Period.

Milk contains antibodies that fight against our own defenses, weakening our bodies.

Eggs from your own healthy chickens are permitted, however, they never belonged in Eden's diet, and are therefore not a necessity.

If you live in the Arctic circle (for example), and your only source of food is animal or fish, far be it for me to lay such a burden upon you. God knows your situation and will give you grace .However for those of us that have a choice, there is no excuse.

If you know to do good and choose not to, IT IS SIN.

Blessings, Scott.

As all of you know, we have Rules and Guidelines for behavior on this site.  These Rules were created by members of this community and improved upon by members of this community.  They are important.  The MAIN reason they are important is because at Adventist Online we wish to reflect Christ in the most clear and accurate way possible.  Any action that breaks our rules is typically an action that obscures Christ through our poor behavior.  Our rules are important, but more important is the basis for our rules.  I ask all to prayerfully read the following copied from our Rules:

Basis For Our Rules:
As you may have noticed, our rules do not make being 'wrong' (in any humans opinion) against the rules. What we do prohibit is the poor treatment of other people and the persistent sowing of discord among our members.  All of us are sinning humans who need to be treated with Christ's love apparent in all interactions.

The scriptural and Spirit of Prophecy basis for our rules are as follows:

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."  Matthew 22:37-40

Dealing with those that do not believe as we do:

     When we meet those that oppose us, we "are to represent the love of God to a fallen world. With hearts melted in tenderness let the word of truth be spoken. Let all who are in error be treated with the gentleness of Christ. If those for whom you labor do not immediately grasp the truth, do not censure, do not criticize or condemn. Remember that you are to represent Christ in His meekness and gentleness and love. We must expect to meet unbelief and opposition. The truth has always had to meet these elements. But though you should meet the bitterest opposition, do not denounce your opponents. They may think, as did Paul, that they are doing God's service, and to such we must manifest patience, meekness, and long-suffering." {6T 120.1}
"Do not cherish a spirit of controversy. Little good is accomplished by denunciatory speeches. The surest way to destroy false doctrine is to preach the truth. Keep to the affirmative. Let the precious truths of the gospel kill the force of evil. Show a tender, pitiful spirit toward the erring. Come close to hearts."  Letter 190, 1902

"And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will."  2 Tim 2:24-26 NKJV

The SPIRIT in which we are to work:  (from a letter from Ellen White to AT Jones)

"He who expects to enlighten a deceived people must come near to them and labor for them in love. He must become a center of holy influence.

In the advocacy of the truth the bitterest opponents should be treated with respect and deference. Some will not respond to our efforts, but will make light of the gospel invitation. Others--even those whom we suppose to have passed the boundary of God's mercy--will be won to Christ. The very last work in the controversy may be the enlightenment of those who have not rejected light and evidence, but who have been in midnight darkness and have in ignorance worked against the truth. Therefore treat every man as honest. Speak no word, do no deed, that will confirm any in unbelief."

"The influence of your teaching would be tenfold greater if you were careful of your words. Words that should be a savor of life unto life may by the spirit which accompanies them be made a savor of death unto death. And remember that if by your spirit or your words you close the door to even one soul, that soul will confront you in the judgment.

Do not, when referring to the Testimonies, feel it your duty to drive them home. In reading the Testimonies be sure not to mix in your filling of words, for this makes it impossible for the hearers to distinguish between the word of the Lord to them and your words. Be sure that you do not make the word of the Lord offensive. We long to see reforms, and because we do not see that which we desire, an evil spirit is too often allowed to cast drops of gall into our cup, and thus others are embittered. By our ill-advised words their spirit is chafed, and they are stirred to rebellion.

Every sermon you preach, every article you write, may be all true; but one drop of gall in it will be poison to the hearer or the reader. Because of that drop of poison, one will discard all your good and acceptable words. Another will feed on the poison; for he loves such harsh words; he follows your example, and talks just as you talk. Thus the evil is multiplied.

Those who present the eternal principles of truth need the holy oil emptied from the two olive branches into the heart. This will flow forth in words that will reform, but not exasperate. The truth is to be spoken in love. Then the Lord Jesus by His Spirit will supply the force and the power. That is His work."   {6T 122,123}

The METHOD by which we are to work:

"If a brother differs with you on some points of truth, do not stoop to ridicule, do not place him in a false light or misconstrue his words, making sport of them; do not misinterpret his words and wrest them of their true meaning.  This is not conscientious argument  Do not present him before others as a heretic, when you have not with him investigated his positions, taking the Scriptures text-by-text in the Spirit of Christ to show him what is truth.  You do not yourself really know the evidence he has for his faith, and you cannot clearly define your own position.  Take your Bible, and in a kindly spirit weigh every argument that he presents, and show him by the Scripture if he is in error.  When you do this without unkind feelings, you will do only that which is your duty and the duty of every minister of Christ."  (EGW to G.I. Butler, Letter 21, 1888 [October 14], The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials 1:98)

We lean heavily on Chapter 6 from Thoughts from the Mount of Blessings entitled "Not Judging, But Doing".  This chapter addresses clearly how we should treat others.  We encourage all to read that chapter in it's entirety.  Read it here.  Here is one excerpt from that chapter:

"Not until you feel that you could sacrifice your own self-dignity, and even lay down your life in order to save an erring brother, have you cast the beam out of your own eye so that you are prepared to help your brother. Then you can approach him and touch his heart. No one has ever been reclaimed from a wrong position by censure and reproach; but many have thus been driven from Christ and led to seal their hearts against conviction. A tender spirit, a gentle, winning deportment, may save the erring and hide a multitude of sins. The revelation of Christ in your own character will have a transforming power upon all with whom you come in contact. Let Christ be daily made manifest in you, and He will reveal through you the creative energy of His word--a gentle, persuasive, yet mighty influence to re-create other souls in the beauty of the Lord our God." Thoughts from the Mount of Blessings pg. 128 -Ellen G. White

Our rules are in place to prevent us from causing others to see us (sinners) instead of the saving beauty of Christ.  Any time a fellow member is antagonized, they will not be drawn to Christ - no matter how 'right' the antagonizer is.  A quote that illustrates this:

"But there was one of the Twelve to whom, until very near the close of His work, Christ spoke no word of direct reproof. ... Jesus, seeing that to antagonize was but to harden, refrained from direct conflict. The narrowing selfishness of Judas' life, Christ sought to heal through contact with His own self-sacrificing love. In His teaching He unfolded principles that struck at the root of the disciple's self-centered ambitions. Lesson after lesson was thus given, and many a time Judas realized that his character had been portrayed, and his sin pointed out; but he would not yield."Education, p. 91, 92 -Ellen G. White

We are all sinners in need of a Savior.  It does not matter if this discussion is in-reach or out-reach.  We much treat all sinners in the manner outlined above.

May these passages influence how we act here.  Blessings to all.

@Adventistonline:  AMEN!!!!  Thank you for holding us all accountable.
"The Health Message IS a salvation issue" - come on!  was Jesus a vegetarian or a vegan?
In view of the sanctuary, was Jesus in the Most Holy Place, Holy Place, or Outter Court???

I believe that answering your question does not change anything. Yes, being in the anti-typical Day of Atonement is a serious time when we should all seek even more diligently to be Christ-like.

But your idea that we MUST follow the Day of Atonement rules that the Israelites did (and thus you say we should eat no meat) is flawed logic. Christians today CANNOT follow the Israelite Day of Atonement rules or else we would all be dead: you yourself have stated that the COI could not eat on the day of atonement. I pointed out that they were forbade to work.  If we believed your premise, we would be the people that were forbade from eating or working.  I find no support for this premise anywhere.

Since Ellen White was also living in the anti-typical Day of Atonement and she made no mention that we should abstain from working and eating (and she worked and ate), I conclude that your attempted enforcement of ancient Day of Atonement rules today as a requirement for salvation is not scriptural or supported by SOP.

Christ was neither a vegetarian or a vegan. Yet he was without sin.

"Christ was neither a vegetarian or a vegan. Yet he was without sin."   LOVE IT!  That is going to be my next Facebook status, Vincenzo! =)

The term is being used that...

"Christ was neither a vegetarian or a vegan. Yet he was without sin."

In view of the sanctuary, was Jesus in the Most Holy Place, Holy Place, or Outter Court???
Jesus was neither...he would not have fed the 4,000, the 5,000, and eaten fish himself after His resurrection if it was.
hi sarah. your friend here. let me just ask. have you heard about the term, "present truth?"
