Stephen Hawking: God did not create Universe

Stephen Hawking
The Universe can create itself from nothing, says Prof Hawking

There is no place for God in theories on the creation of the Universe, Professor Stephen Hawking has said.

He had previously argued belief in a creator was not incompatible with science but in a new book, he concludes the Big Bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.

The Grand Design, part serialised in the Times, says there is no need to invoke God to set the Universe going.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something," he concluded.

'Planetary conditions'

In his new book, an extract of which appears in the Times, Britain's most famous physicist sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not
have sprung out of chaos.

Citing the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun, he said: "That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions - the single Sun, the lucky
combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass - far less remarkable,
and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully
designed just to please us human beings."

He adds: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

The book was co-written by US physicist Leonard Mlodinow and is published on 9 September.

In his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking appeared to accept the role of God in the creation of the Universe.

"If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we should know the mind of God," he said.

""Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something," he concluded."

Shame that it is not observable to prove the theory.

Nature teaches us that order descends into chaos with no demonstrable evidence of order coming out of chaos.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing." - ah, the unmistakable logic of the illogical. If there is nothing then how can there be gravity to create something from that nothing? Oh wait... "create"... isn't that, er, creation? Or is it now being suggested that evolution and creation are synonymous?

Takes a lot of faith to believe in this kind of science.
there is a lolt going on up there. where did God come from. the bible states that God is a spirit. hes everywhere at the same time. the universe came from a nothing is mindboggling. so it must have always been. they use terms such as dark energy, dark matter. they say stars are exploding. you have black holes that suck up everything in its path. if we just evovled out of nothing, then you can believe that God also could have not been and then was. it suggest a designer. . he said he was the beginning and the end. .history records that a man named Jesus walked the earth and died on the cross. there is evidence of the events in the bible happened. could man have wrote it to give false hope? maybe a very small chance. but i do believe in my God of heaven. and the one who died for me, Jesus. its all anyone has on this earth. there is nothing else. because you live and then die.
Daniel said, "history records that a man named Jesus walked the earth and died on the cross."

Hmm... does it? I'm not sure if there is any independent verification/witness of Jesus' existence outside the Bible?
JohnB, Here's a wonderful website that lists all the early historians who record Jesus and Christian followers that were "causing problems". These Roman and Jewish historians had no reason to lie. There are many other websites, books and video that present this information, which was often hard to find before the internet!

One of my favs is this:

The Father Came Down From The Temple In Heaven To Be With His Son At The Cross:

The biblical account is found in the book of Psalm written by King David in 1000 BC, prophetic events of Jesus on the cross.

Psalm 18:2-11 "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies." (King David 1000 B.C.)

Then in Matthew 27:45-54 the events of Jesus on the cross are recorded at that time, including the darkness we are told was Father God!

This darkness from God, earthquake, and events of Jesus' crucifixion were also recorded by secular historians of the time.

THALLUS (~ 52 A.D.) Although his works exist only in fragments, Julius Africanus debates Thallus' explanation of the midday darkness which occurred during the Passover of Jesus' crucifixion. Thallus tries to dismiss the darkness as a natural occurrence (a solar eclipse) but Africanus argues (and any astronomer can confirm) a solar eclipse cannot physically occur during a full moon due to the alignment of the planets. Phlegon of Tralles, a 2nd century secular historian, also mentions the darkness and tries to dismiss it as a solar eclipse. He also states the event occurred during the time of Tiberius Caesar.

"On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness. The rocks were rent by an earthquake and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. This darkness Thallus, in the third book of his History, calls, as appears to me without reason, an eclipse of the sun. For the Hebrews celebrate the passover on the 14th day according to the moon, and the passion of our Savior falls on the day before the passover. But an eclipse of the sun takes place only when the moon comes under the sun. And it cannot happen at any other time... Phlegon records that, in the time of Tiberius Caesar, at full moon, there was a full eclipse of the sun from the sixth hour to the ninth-manifestly that one of which we speak." Chronography XVIII, 47
These verses also apply to the above.

God uses thick darkness to veil His Glory:

Exo 20:21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

Deu 4:11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. 12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

Deu 5:22 These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.

1 Ki 8:11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD. 12 Then spake Solomon, The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

2 Chr 5:14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God. 6:1 Then said Solomon, The LORD hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

in his previous book on time he had place for God and in fact a necessity for God....

apparently his brains have evolved over time( here is a clear case and proof of evolution) and the process of ageing of setting in of Alzheimers? or other types of higher/ progressive evolution has to definitely speak that his father is bomb blast in accordance with the laws of physics which were set in place by ??

How long man would go to disown the claims of Him?

pity and tragedy on the media who publishes it blazing... did they give the same publicity to Newton when he expressed his faith in GOD? or any other scientist who would say the same today?

people listen to what they want to hear..

pity that this "scientist" fathoms so much of physical reality without even having any idea of spiritual realities..

why does he say that we should know the mind of God ?

this kind of science is nothing but a bundle of contradiction..

why should we pay attention to this?
The supposed 'big bang' is a belief, not a fact, and has been refuted, even debunked, by many other scientists. Exploding The Big Bang

We should remember Adam and Eve were created fully grown on a fully functional planet, according to the Bible. This means the universe was probably also fully developed complete with visible starlight. Still, is there a way to date the universe?

We can date our own galaxy within a biblical range with observed supernovas.

ACCORDING TO ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS, galaxies like our own experience about one supernova (a violently-exploding star) every 25 years. The gas and dust remnants from such explosions (like the Crab Nebula) expand outward rapidly and should remain visible for over a million years. Yet the nearby parts of our galaxy in which we could observe such gas and dust shells contain only 274 supernova remnants. That number is consistent with only about 7,000 years worth of supernovas.

According to their [astronomers] model, the SNR should reach a diameter of about 300 light years after 120,000 years. So if our galaxy was billions of years old, we should be able to observe many SNRs this size. But if our galaxy is 6,000-10,000 years old, no SNRs would have had time to reach this size. So the number of observed SNRs of a particular size is an excellent test of whether the galaxy is old or young. In fact, the results are consistent with a universe thousands of years old, but are a puzzle if the universe has existed for billions of years.
As usual He has it wrong.............again................. Nuff sed
perhaps Nuff sed, Steven Hawkings is a wonderful mind trapped in a not so wonderful body....

The natural laws allows for spontaneous creation ? According to the latest wave theory there are 6 laws required to make this happen with no deviations from a narrow range of wave theory to work, this makes for a possible 6 different kinds of universes, and for the impossibility of bringing such fine adjustments of laws together in the first place....

The universe is made from the smallest particle, the photon which is made from smaller particles....photons are massless. According to theory without their speed they do not exist.

Nothing comes from nothing even if given laws to do so. Where does the movement or motion of nothingness come from ? Silence....

Its possible perhaps something can come from something...perhaps you might believe this....

But something cannot come from nothing....a zero is a zero of non-existance....so if photons are massless, and without movement do not exist, where did the movement of nothingness come from ?

spontaneous creation is really a fancy word to make us believe something can come from nothing !!!!

It takes less faith that GOD (a really big something) made our universe (a really tiny something) from his own inherent powers.....

As a word of caution as Christians, do not speak of ex nihlo, ie God can create something from nothing, there are no BIble texts on this idea, nothing about the origin of matter at all, the concept of "bara" meaning to create something from nothing is evolutionary and should not be used.....I believe GOD can create and call things into existance through the word, the Holy Spirit did the empowering of this creation in ways the Bible does not explain....if we must say anything, GOD spoke matter into existance, where did this quantum come from ? From God, he is something, so something called the other somethings to exist.....

I am also trying to avoid pathesism whatever that theory really means, never did understand what Kellogg or EGW were on about, God is not in creation, God empowers His creation to exist, does this make sense ? I do not believe God can call something from nothing, otherwise we allude to evolutionary spontaneous creation, Satans idea of creation.

I believe it's the other way around, Rob.

God can and has called something out of nothing, and science is going to have to accept that. So, evolutionists came up with their own theory of something out of nothing as a counterfeit of what God has already done.

God Bless, Alex.

according to EGW writings "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever" (Deuteronomy 29:29). Just how God accomplished the work of creation He has never revealed to men; human science cannot search out the secrets of the Most High. His creative power is as incomprehensible as His existence".

so the creation of universe will remain a mystery. scientist only provides series of theories to speculate things, something to fill in their curious minds..
Actually there are many Christian scientists out there CHristianCHick....

Ex Nilhlo magazine which I used to subscribe, wonderful stuff the Creation scientist movement reported in 1980's more than 700 world class scientists believe in GOd and creation....more than you think....problem is they will push christianity to government levels and we will push traditional Sunday worship instead....no credible scientist believes in evolution much anymore, and by that I mean stellar evolution, planentary evolution, atomic evolution and so on, the current pathetic evidence for micro-evolution is really variety God placed there to hlep species survive a singul world....
