Self-  esteem up coming SS lesson No- 9

Phillipians 2:3     [Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteeem other better than themselves.

For the purpose of the ignorant- there is a Sabbath school class for the  week-9 talking about the topic on self esteem.

For the purpose of those who still value and still regard the word of GOD and the spirit of Prophecy and for those who are still loyal to truth than to any group or organization  and for those who profess obedience to His word than to any tradition of men I would like to bring to your attention the following :-

Even many who appear to be conscientious Christians are hindered by pride and self-esteeem from going privately to those whom they think in error, that they may talk with them in the spirit of Christ and pray {AA 305.1}

Pride, self-esteeem, and boldness are marked characteristics of the children of this day; and they are the curse of the age. . . . {CG 144.2}

Every seed yields fruit after its kind. So it is with the traits of character we cherish. Selfishness, self-love, self-esteeem, self-indulgence, reproduce themselves; and the end is wretchedness and ruin. "He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." Galatians 6:8.  {CG 162.4}

There should be a solemn awe upon the worshipers as they enter the sanctuary, and they should leave behind all common worldly thoughts, for it is the place where God reveals His presence. It is as the audience chamber of the great and eternal God; therefore pride and passion, dissension and self-esteeem, selfishness, and covetousness, which God pronounces idolatry, are inappropriate for such a place.  {CG 543.1}

These are in need of stepping down from their self-esteeem and self-righteousness, and humbling themselves before God. . . {CTr 135.5}

Every seed sown produces a harvest of its kind. …we shall reap what we sow. Every characteristic of selfishness, self-love, self-esteeem, every act of self-indulgence, will bring forth a like harvest. He who lives for self is sowing to the flesh, and of the flesh he will reap corruption.  {COL 84.3}

Their self-esteeem, their idea that a superficial knowledge of things constitutes education, make them boastful and self-satisfied, when they are, as were the Pharisees, ignorant of the Scriptures and the power of God.  {CE 100.1}

While the gospel constantly sanctifies and ennobles the receiver, it will never lead us to cherish …pride and self-esteeem. Every soul who sees Christ as he is, will abase self.  {CE 201.2}

If you will sincerely humble your hearts before Him, empty your souls of self-esteeem, and put away the natural defects of your character, and overcome your love of supremacy, and come to God as little children, He will bestow on you His Holy Spirit.  .--Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 323, 324. {ChL 5.2}

Had Moses and Aaron been cherishing self-esteeem or indulging a passionate spirit in the face of divine warning and reproof, their guilt would have been far greater.  . .  {CC 110.2}

Pride, self-esteeem, and boldness are marked characteristics of the children of this day, and they are the curse of the age. ..I know that it is exactly the opposite course from the one that should be pursued.  {CSW 45.2}

He who has an unusual following, he who has received many words of commendation from the messengers of the Lord, needs the special prayers of God's faithful watchmen, that he may be shielded from the danger of cherishing thoughts of self-esteeem and spiritual pride.  {CS 147.2}

The evils of self-esteeem and an unsanctified independence, which most impair our usefulness, and which will prove our ruin if not overcome, spring from selfishness. .  {CT 92.2}

They must put away their self-esteeem and self-importance, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ..  {CT 508.2}

Selfishness, self-love, self-esteeem, self-indulgence, reproduce themselves, and the end is wretchedness and ruin.  {Ed 109.1}

The Lord would do great things for the workers, but their hearts are not humble. Should the Lord work in them, they would become lifted up, filled with self-esteeem, and would demerit their brethren.--Review and Herald, July 12, 1887.  {Ev 333.1}

But when the garden of the heart is neglected, poisonous weeds of pride, self-esteeem, self-sufficiency, obtain a rank growth. We individually must watch unto prayer.  {Ev 342.1}

Every one of us must fall on the Rock and be broken. Will any retain one particle of self-esteeem?  {FW 60.2}

Admonition from God

Rom 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2Co 13:5  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.

1Th 5:21  Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Is it possible that EGW means self esteem something different from what we are meaning? In her time did it mean something else than how we use the term today?

Actually I do believe given the context of her writing she is using it differently. Today we use self esteem as a way of saying people value them selves enough. In the context with which she was using it she was referring to people who value them selves to highly, and in many cases are selfish, arrogant and lazy.

A.K.A. People who are vain and in love with them selves, esteeming them selves over their brothers, and sisters in Christ, thinking they are all that matters, or that they are better and more highly favored or even (like Lucifer) think they should be more highly favored.

A dog thinks: These people feed me, pet me, love me, they must be God.
A cat thinks: These people feed me, pet me, love me, I must be a God.

:)

 Actually  David  I like this post It does make one think.  , I cannot say for sure if what  Sis  White was saying about self esteem is the same as now,. I know  one thing  it depends on the time and place and the context of what was being said and not just a few sentences..

 I do like  what Kristina  Pauly  quoted though..I am wondering  here if their is  a different term that can be used instead of self esteem?   It seems to  me I heard tell of a different term and their was a difference in the meanings but I not remembering exactly what it was.  what does the term self worth mean ?  Is it the same or different all together?/

 I looking forward to answers  that be well worth reading instead of 1 liners many have to say!  iwent online searching  for an answer myself and came across    SELF  WORTH . IT IS  all together different then self esteem
