The evidence for a historical Jesus is unconvincing

If a person accepts hearsay and accounts from believers as historical evidence for Jesus, then shouldn't they act consistently to other accounts based solely on hearsay and belief?

To take one example, examine the evidence for Hercules of Greek mythology and you will find it parallels the "historicity" of Jesus to such an amazing degree that for Christian apologists to deny Hercules as a historical person belies and contradicts the very same methodology used for a historical Jesus.

Note that Herculean myth resembles Jesus in many areas. The mortal and chaste Alcmene, the mother of Hercules, gave birth to him from a union with God (Zeus). Similar to Herod who wanted to kill Jesus, Hera wanted to kill Hercules. Like Jesus, Hercules traveled the earth as a mortal helping mankind and performed miraculous deeds. Similar to Jesus who died and rose to heaven, Hercules died, rose to Mt. Olympus and became a god. Hercules gives example of perhaps the most popular hero in Ancient Greece and Rome. They believed that he actually lived, told stories about him, worshiped him, and dedicated temples to him.

Likewise the "evidence" of Hercules closely parallels that of Jesus. We have historical people like Hesiod and Plato who mention Hercules in their writings. Similar to the way the gospels tell a narrative story of Jesus, so do we have the epic stories of Homer who depict the life of Hercules. Aesop tells stories and quotes the words of Hercules. Just as we have a brief mention of Jesus by Joesphus in his Antiquities, Joesphus also mentions Hercules (more times than Jesus), in the very same work. Just as Tacitus mentions a Christus, so does he also mention Hercules many times in his Annals. And most importantly, just as we have no artifacts, writings or eyewitnesses about Hercules, we also have nothing about Jesus. All information about Hercules and Jesus comes from stories, beliefs, and hearsay.

Should we then believe in a historical Hercules, simply because ancient historians mention him and that we have stories and beliefs about him?

Of course not, and the same must apply to Jesus if we wish to hold any consistency to historicity.

 One cannot prove Jesus to some, as anything can be refuted as evidence and some would not accept evidence no matter how much and how clear it is. The Bible is rejected by many. We must experience Jesus.

So what's the issue, what do you need help with?

Jesus did not become a god He was always God

Jesus is not a historical figure or person He is the I Am; He has always been and will always be.

 Do you wand proof that He is?  What has he done in your life? Go asked the former drunk,  or the murderer, or the prostitute or the adulterer or the fornicator or the gossiper go ask them whether Jesus is real.

Thanks both of you for your prompt reply

There are in fact big issues about christmas celebration. All points are baas and need to be answered. I wish others give their point of view. So many issues attached to Christmas.

Ellen White has repeated that the 25th of December is not Christ's birthday, notwithstanding it would be a good idea to 'celebrate' this day as Christians would or should.

Chrismas is a differnt story, together with easter and good friday. They all have a non-christian/ non-Biblical background.

As such, we cannot judge the genuineness of Christ and Christianity based on non-christian festivities. Similarly, we cannot judge Christ based on our misrepresentation of Him. However, if we lived a true Christian lifestyle, we would be an open letter preaching Christ and His righteousness

The twenty-fifth of December is supposed to be the day of the birth of Jesus Christ, and its observance has become customary and popular. But yet there is no certainty that we are keeping the veritable day of our Saviour’s birth. History gives us no certain assurance of this. The Bible does not give us the precise time. Had the Lord deemed this knowledge essential to our salvation, He would have spoken through His prophets and apostles, that we might know all about the matter. But the silence of the Scriptures upon this point evidences to us that it is hidden from us for the wisest purposes. {AH 477.2}

By the world the holidays are spent in frivolity and extravagance, gluttony and display.... Thousands of dollars will be worse than thrown away upon the coming Christmas and New Year’s in needless indulgences.But it is our privilege to depart from the customs and practices of this degenerate age; and instead of expending means merely for the gratification of the appetite or for needless ornaments or articles of clothing, we may make the coming holidays an occasion in which to honor and glorify God.6 {AH 480.3}

.

.

The holiday season is fast approaching with its interchange of gifts, and old and young are intently studying what they can bestow upon their friends as a token of affectionate remembrance. It is pleasant to receive a gift, however small, from those we love. It is an assurance that we are not forgotten, and seems to bind us to them a little closer.... {AH 478.4}
.
..
It is right to bestow upon one another tokens of love and remembrance if we do not in this forget God, our best friend. We should make our gifts such as will prove a real benefit to the receiver. Iwould recommend such books as will be an aid in understanding the word of God or that will increase our love for its precepts. Provide something to be read during these long winter evenings.3 {AH 479.1}
.
..
God would be well pleased if on Christmas each church would have a Christmas tree on which shall be hung offerings, great and small, for these houses of worship. [Note: reference is made in this article to current building projects. As the principles set forth in this connection are applicable today, these specific references are left in the article.Letters of inquiry have come to us asking, Shall we have a Christmas tree? Will it not be like the world? We answer, You can make it like the world if you have a disposition to do so, or you can make it as unlike the world as possible. There is no particular sin in selecting a fragrant evergreen and placing it in our churches, but the sin lies in the motive which prompts to action and the use which is made of the gifts placed upon the tree. {AH 482.1}
.
.
The tree may be as tall and its branches as wide as shall best suit the occasion; but let its boughs be laden with the golden and silver fruit of your beneficence, and present this to Him as your Christmas gift. Let your donations be sanctified by prayer.9 {AH 482.2}
.
.
Christmas and New Year celebrations can and should be held in behalf of those who are helpless. God is glorified when we give to help those who have large families to support. {AH 482.3
.
.
Let not the parents take the position that an evergreen placed in the church for the amusement of the Sabbath school scholars is a sin, for it may be made a great blessing. Keep before their minds benevolent objects. In no case should mere amusement be the object of these gatherings. While there may be some who will turn these occasions into seasons of careless levity, and whose minds will not receive the divine impress, to other minds and characters these seasons will be highly beneficial. I am fully satisfied that innocent substitutes can be devised for many gatherings that demoralize.11 {AH 482.4}

I can't find this in the Bible

actually it's not. There is no command to 'celebrate' Christmas but much good could be done on this day instead of saying " I don't celebrate Christmas because I am a seventh day adventist, I will keep all my good for myself" etc

I didn't think so

December 25 is a dated that a long been associated with admiration of deities of ancient civilizations, we typically call pagans. We know how it came into practice in our modern Christian society, we do; and dressing it up as a pig and serving it to our God, doesn’t change what it is. Christmas is so entangled in our minds and our society, and it is very difficult to break out of, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for many. Never-the-less, God says, Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues

So Jacob said to his family and all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your clothes. Gen.35:2

Some of us have to change our cloths, our change our minds, some things are not easy, but I say follow God.

If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Jos. 24:15)

Vim,

Jesus asked his disciples’ two questions; who do men, say I am, and who do you say the son of man is? You have to resolve this in your own spirit, because the just shall live by faith. If you listen to men, you will find there are numerous stories of other Jesus; listen to God.

Some years ago, I too did a search, and the Jesus outside the bible…well you know that song which says, “I search all over, couldn’t find nobody, nobody greater than you.”  Sure other Jesus stories that can be found throughout civilization but they’re not genuine, they’re not the unique One (The Only Begotten).

I see Bessy’s point, but I don’t think Christmas is so much different because it’s fake too; it’s not genuine, it’s just another extension of the beast power as it controls this world system, to blind the eyes of mankind with its glitter so they can’t see the glorious gospel of the Unique One. God’s message is, worship Him! Worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.

Stop worshiping the beast, don’t worship his holy days; worship God, the creator.

The just shall live by Faith.

Having said that, I cannot talk for herculis, but for my Jesus I can. He speaks with me, talks with me, and He is alive in my heart. I know He is real because He has a relatioship with me. I know when I go astray from Him and I can tell when He embraces me close.

Its hard to describe Faith, but when one experiences it, you know it is.

Maybe the best way to answer your question is to do a small experiment. I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but it does not matter.

With a sincere heart, as in, out of a genuine want to know, ask herculis if he be real to prove himself to you in a clear undeniable way. Do the same for Jesus and whoever reveiles Himself, is the true GOD.

Elijah did it, and it worked...

Before I joined adventism, i asked HIm to reviel Himself if He be real and He did.  I know whom I have believed.

Try Him.
