We are told to REST. But if there is an ox in the ditch ....
We have always understood that certain occupations were exempt from the prohibition but I've never seen a list :-)

At our church we had a policeman who used to turn up with a jacket over his uniform and his radio plugged discretely into his ear. Sometimes he would take a sudden leave and be picked up by a patrol car outside church. I had a friend who was an anesthesiologist. He would sometimes be called to work on the Sabbath. He always stipulated that the operation must be necessary, i.e. life-threatening reason, and not cosmetic. Whatever he was paid for the day he would then donate towards evangelism. We also have our share of nurses, doctors and carers who fulfill a vital 24/7 service to the community.

I'm not aware of what, if any, Bible texts are used to support this idea that certain occupations can work but I do feel that God wants us to be sensible about what we do. We know deep in our hearts whether we are aware of doing something wrong and keep in the mind that we were not made to keep the Sabbath, the Sabbath was made for us. So, we have to use God-given wisdom.

I don't know if this specifically helps... interesting topic.
Yes, a doctor, a nurse, a caregiver in any situation, fire personnel, police, even housekeeping staff in hospitals, rehab, etc. are performing a service to others that is indispensable. Ambulance drivers, electricians in administration facilities; there are many others. If any of these services were unavailable, lives could be affected or lost.

I believe we need to acess what is necessary to life today. It was much simpler in the days of Jesus when helping others was a simple task/idea. 4 Him: yes, if there is an ox in the ditch...
Yes. I was going to say an ass instead of ox ... but I wasn't sure that would pass editing by the moderator. Well .... I guess I've gone and done it now. So we will see.
Mar 3:1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
Mar 3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
Mar 3:3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
Mar 3:4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
Mar 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
Mar 3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
Working on the Sabbath is wrong! You started you question well by referring to docs etc. I don't think it's wrong for them if they are not '...doing their own pleasure...' on the Lords day but are '...saving life...'
Sorry for not citing the verses, I will give you later on please

I'm not repling to your comment I'm just adding and experience I had on Sabbath evening last, I would normal be out of my work place by 5:50 or 5:55p.m on Friday evening. But last Friday while I'm trying to finish work the computer shot down and no matter what I try it was not working in order for me to finish my report and this report must be finish for the next day in order for the department to run there production. I had to resort to doing this report manualy and did not leave the office until 7:40p.m. When this happen all I could of done was cry and welcome the sabbath and ask God to forgive me. Could anyone help me out here tell what should I have done
it''s a tough one. God clearly says no work on the Sabbath. I can't make a judgment for you, Millions were executed during the dark ages for keeping the Sabbath, and standing for Gods truth. We should be Happy to sacrifice a job or even our lives for God's Word. Do we tell God our jobs are more important that Him?
I think your ox was in the ditch.
N HIM, finishing a work related project is not an emergency. For liberals, it certainly is. Liberals in my church also go to restaurants and eat their roasted ox that was butchered especially for the occasion.
I truly believe that we should never compromise. I myself have struggled with this in the past, but every day that goes by I pray to God to continue to finish the work He started within me. I no longer work on the Sabbath, but at the same time I am not perfect. My advice to you, Tess, is that you ask God to give you the strength to stand firm when trials come your way. Remember that God knows our every need. Some times we only think we need something, like a certain job, or a certain someone, or a certain something, when in reality God may have something totally different in mind.

Consider Matthew 6:25,26:

25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

God's desire for us is not to harm us, so next time have a little more faith. Pray when things like that happen, stay firm, and you will see in the end that God did not fail to filfil His promise to you. I even suggest you talk to your employer to make it clear that you cannot work after sundown on Friday; No exceptions. That way they can have some kind of plan for when problems like that arise. I've learned that employers can be very understanding and resourcful if we just let them know what's going on.

I hope I've helped you in some way with your problem Tess, God bless.
