WE CAN WALK A BETTER PATH (IF WE CHOOSE)

It has been discovered through scientific research that we actually etch neurological pathways in our brains when we form habits. That is why habits can be so hard to overcome. When we form habits it is like we cut a trial or pathway through a section of our mind. We establish that trail by first making a choice to begin indulging in that particular habit, and by reusing it over and over until we have trod down all of the vegetation and there is nothing left but a smooth dirt trail. By habitually walking that trial when insure that it remains easily passable without any impedances. The science has shown that once these habitual neurological pathways are established, they can never be erased. They will remain in our brain until our brains are no more. However, there is some good news. Although we can never erase those established pathways, we can cease to use them and establish new pathways. All of our sin is rooted in our rebellion against God’s authority. We are all born with the propensity to sin, because as Paul’s tells us in Romans chapter 7, we all have the law of sin and death in our members (bodies) warring against the law of God in our minds and consciences (see Hebrews chapter 8). We have all sinned, but some of us are much more habitual about sinning than others. The reason is that some of us walk that pathway (or practice our sin) more often than others. By practicing our sin we etch the habit of that sin in our minds and it makes it very difficult to overcome it. The good news is that through the power that is in Christ Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit, we can establish new righteous habits (pathways). We can renew our minds. Remodel them in a sense. By using prayer and by taking the word of God as our sword (or machete’), we can cut out new neurological pathways in our minds. It is always more difficult to establish a good pathway, than it is a bad one, because of the temptations of Satan and the law of sin warring against our efforts, but it can be done by the power of the Spirit. He will guide us down these new righteous pathways and help us blaze the trail. But it takes commitment. He will guide us, but He will not push us down the trail. We must choose and commit to walk that new trail and leave the old trail behind. After we walk the new trail for a while, and we clear more and more vegetation, we will not only find that the new trail is well established and easier to walk day by day, but we will also see that the old, unused pathways have become overgrown again. Those old bad pathways are still there, but no longer as noticeable or desirable to us anymore. There is only one way to establish these new righteous pathways and that is to be just as faithful in practicing obedience to righteousness (doing what is right), as we were at practicing our sin. It will be difficult at times, but we must press on, because at the end of God’s righteous path is His Kingdom and eternal life. There is an open invitation to all who will choose to walk His path and complete the journey. With Him as our Guide and strength we cannot fail.
