Why are our some of our SDA G.C.(General Conference Churches) not allowing the Old SDA HIGH Standards of the "Three Angels Messages" to be proclaimed & are trying to introduce the Purpose Driven CHURCH Theology into Adventism?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since His ascension Christ has carried forward His work on the earth by chosen Ambassadors, through whom He speaks to the children of men and ministers to their needs. The great Head of the Church Superintends His work through the instrumentality of men ordained by God to act as His Representatives.
The position of those who have been called of God to labor in word and doctrine for the up building of His church is one of grave responsibility. In Christ's stead they are to beseech men and women to be reconciled to God, and they can fulfill their mission only as they receive wisdom and power from above.
Christ's ministers are the spiritual guardians of the people entrusted to their care. Their work has been likened to that of watchmen. In ancient times sentinels were often stationed on the walls of cities, where, from points of vantage, they could overlook important posts to be guarded, and give warning of the approach of an enemy.
There is an intersting and important article written by Pr. Thomas Mostert, President of the Pacific Union Conference, and published by the Pacific Press Publishing Association. Please read it and you will know the answer to the question above.
In early January 2005 I received a letter asking for my opinion
on a document by an unknown author. It addressed some of the
current trends in popular churches and suggested potential problems
if Adventist churches took the same course. Th at letter and
document started me on a study far more detailed than I had ever
done on this subject. It also reinforced my concerns about some
disturbing trends I had noticed in the church.
As I researched the positions of well-known churches and compared
those fi ndings with inspired counsel, my discoveries led to
an ever growing set of notes. Later, when I shared my thinking
with the conference presidents of the Pacifi c Union, they encouraged
me to share the information more widely. What you have in
your hands is a result of what I have discovered so far.
I hope what you fi nd in these pages will bring a new awareness
of the issues and a commitment to God’s truth in your own life.
Th is is the end time, and our loving Savior has shared with us—in
His own words and through His prophets—everything we need
to stay on course to the kingdom. He has given us guidance and
warnings to help our church relate to the world around us.
Certain things I discovered as I studied were new to me, and
they were obviously controversial. So I counseled with a number
of people. I thank each one for taking the time to read the
material and share their opinions and suggestions. Special
thanks go to my friend Dr. Herb Douglass, who off ered invaluable
assistance and encouragement along the way. You
should be aware that except where otherwise indicated, all bold
type in this book represents emphasis that I have added. I have
also included full quotations in most cases in order to better
provide complete and correct context for the relevant portions
cited.
You may or may not agree with my conclusions. But in any
case, you will be more informed as to the veiled nature of
spiritualism in the great controversy going on between Christ
and Satan, and its present and future infl uence in the churches.
I also hope your understanding and commitment to the Seventhday
Adventist mission will be expanded.
CHAPTER
Spiritualism infl uencing the Adventist Church? “What a bizarre
idea,” you say. “How in the world could something so foreign
to the very heart of Adventism possibly gain entry into this
church? And what pastor or member would stand by and let it
happen? Th at just isn’t possible!”
But before you dismiss this idea as impossible, take the quiz
below and see if you are really aware of the present façade of
modern spiritualism. Its concepts have become accepted in the
Christian church and now seem to be coming, unrecognized,
through the back door of some Adventist churches.
Spiritualism is now changing its form and, veiling some
of its more objectionable features, is assuming a Christian
guise. . . .
Christ is as verily rejected as before; but Satan has so
blinded the eyes of the people that the deception is not
discerned (Th e Great Controversy, pp. 557, 558).
“Satan . . . comes to poor, deceived mortals, through modern
spiritualism. . . . Th e world knows but little as yet of the
corrupting infl uence of spiritualism. Th e curtain was lifted,
and much of its dreadful work was revealed to me” (Testimonies
for the Church, vol. 1, p. 343). And in the context of Satan’s last
great deception, Ellen White wrote, “Th e line of distinction
between professed Christians and the ungodly is now hardly
distinguishable. Church members love what the world loves
and are ready to join with them, and Satan determines to unite
them in one body and thus strengthen his cause by sweeping
all into the ranks of spiritualism” (Th e Great Controversy,
p. 588).
Can you identify veiled spiritualism?
Read the following statements carefully. Within these wellknown
non-Adventist theological teachings, see if you can spot
those that prepare the way for spiritualism. Circle the numbers
that express spiritualistic concepts. (Note: You are looking for
that which opens the door to spiritualism, not whether you
agree with the theological viewpoint.)
1. Th rough continuous spiritual consciousness, death no
longer exists.
2. Sin is any act or thought that robs myself or another human
being of his or her self-esteem.
3. To be born again means we must be changed from a
negative to a positive self-image—from inferiority to
self-esteem, from fear to love, from doubt to trust.
4. In the mind of Jesus, self-esteem is the ultimate human
value. Christ came to teach that simple truth, and He
came to live it.
7
5. Jesus Christ knew, in reality, there is no evil. Th erefore
evil is a false law man has made for himself.
6. All true believers are one with Christ and each other,
regardless of denominational background.
7. “If I Accept Jesus Christ Is My Salvation Forever?” Defi -
nitely! Your salvation is through the most trustworthy
being in the universe—Jesus Christ! You didn’t do anything
to earn your salvation, and you can’t do anything
to lose it. Your salvation is maintained by God’s trustworthiness
and love, not by what you do.
8. When you stand before God, He will not ask you about
your religious background or doctrinal views. Th e only
thing that will matter is: Did you accept Jesus?
9. If you want Jesus to come back sooner, focus on fulfi lling
your mission, not fi guring out prophecies.
10. I invite you to bow your head and quietly whisper the
prayer that will change your eternity: “Jesus, I believe in
you and receive you.” Go ahead. If you sincerely meant
that prayer, congratulations. Welcome to the family of
God.
If you circled all ten statements, you spotted veiled spiritualism.
If you missed some, you will learn more in the following
pages. (Th e source for each of the ten statements above is given
at the end of this chapter.)
You will also recognize that most of these statements come
from very popular and fast-growing churches. Since some Adventists
are studying the church growth concepts of these
churches, it is possible that while pursuing the worthy goal of
growing the church, the door is opened to concepts that could
have a corrupting infl uence.
Th e two great end-time errors
In the vast sweep of end-time events that will take place before
Jesus comes, spiritualism and Sunday sacredness will play
pivotal roles. Th ey will contribute to the spiritual decline of the
popular churches, even as these churches seem caught up in a
grand revival. Ellen White describes the last deception in these
words:
Th rough the two great errors, the immortality of
the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the
people under his deceptions. While the former lays the
foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of
sympathy with Rome. Th e Protestants of the United
States will be foremost in stretching their hands across
the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will
reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman
power; and under the infl uence of this threefold union,
this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling
on the rights of conscience (Th e Great Controversy,
p. 588).
Sacredness of God’s law
Satan began his rebellion in heaven with the clear goal of
doing away with the law of God. Th at was one of the primary
issues that caused him and a third of the angels to be cast out of
heaven. It is still his primary goal, and through various means he
9
is attempting to erase God’s law from human consciousness. We
must keep this clearly in mind as we move through this study,
for it is the key issue that emerges again and again in the great
controversy. “Satan grew bold in his rebellion, and expressed his
contempt of the Creator’s law. Th is Satan could not bear. He
claimed that angels needed no law but should be left free to follow
their own will, which would ever guide them right; that law
was a restriction of their liberty; and that to abolish law was one
great object of his” (Th e Story of Redemption, pp. 18, 19).
Because the children of men reject the plainest teachings
of his word, and trample upon his law, God leaves
them to choose that which they desire. Th ey spurn the
truth, and he permits them to believe a lie. Th ey refuse to
yield to the convictions of the Holy Spirit, and Satan,
transforming himself into an angel of light, leads them
captive at his will. If men were but conversant with the
word of God, and obedient to its teachings, they could not
be thus deceived; but they neglect the great detector of
fraud, and the mind becomes confused and corrupted by
the deceptive arts of men, and the secret power of the father
of lies (Signs of the Times, May 18, 1882).
Marvelous beyond expression is the blindness of the
people of this generation. Th ousands reject the word of
God as unworthy of belief and with eager confi dence
receive the deceptions of Satan. Skeptics and scoff ers
denounce the bigotry of those who contend for the faith
of prophets and apostles, and they divert themselves by
holding up to ridicule the solemn declarations of the Scriptures
concerning Christ and the plan of salvation, and the
retribution to be visited upon the rejecters of the truth. Th ey
aff ect great pity for minds so narrow, weak, and superstitious
as to acknowledge the claims of God and obey the
requirements of His law. Th ey manifest as much assurance
as if, indeed, they had made a covenant with death and an
agreement with hell—as if they had erected an impassable,
impenetrable barrier between themselves and the vengeance
of God. Nothing can arouse their fears. So fully have
they yielded to the tempter, so closely are they united
with him, and so thoroughly imbued with his spirit,
that they have no power and no inclination to break
away from his snare (Th e Great Controversy, p. 561).
Th e substitution of the laws of men for the law of
God, the exaltation, by merely human authority, of
Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath, is the last act in
the drama. When this substitution becomes universal,
God will reveal Himself (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7,
p. 141).
Veiled spiritualism
Spiritualism is the other great issue in end-time events.
“Satan determines to unite them [professed Christians
and the ungodly] in one body and thus strengthen his
cause by sweeping all into the ranks of spiritualism” (Th e
Great Controversy, p. 588). But it will take on a new look,
dress in new clothes, and appear to be something it isn’t.
11
Under this “Christian” guise, spiritualism successfully prepares
people to accept the false teachings of evil spirits that
directly contradict Scripture.
Th ose who oppose the teachings of spiritualism are assailing,
not men alone, but Satan and his angels. Th ey
have entered upon a contest against principalities and
powers and wicked spirits in high places. Satan will not
yield one inch of ground except as he is driven back by the
power of heavenly messengers. Th e people of God should
be able to meet him, as did our Saviour, with the words:
“It is written.” Satan can quote Scripture now as in the
days of Christ, and he will pervert its teachings to sustain
his delusions. Th ose who would stand in this time
of peril must understand for themselves the testimony
of the Scriptures.
Many will be confronted by the spirits of devils personating
beloved relatives or friends and declaring the
most dangerous heresies. Th ese visitants will appeal to
our tenderest sympathies and will work miracles to sustain
their pretensions. We must be prepared to withstand them
with the Bible truth that the dead know not anything and
that they who thus appear are the spirits of devils.
Just before us is “the hour of temptation, which shall
come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the
earth.” Revelation 3:10. All whose faith is not fi rmly established
upon the word of God will be deceived and overcome.
Satan “works with all deceivableness of unrighteousness”
to gain control of the children of men, and his
deceptions will continually increase. But he can gain his
object only as men voluntarily yield to his temptations.
Th ose who are earnestly seeking a knowledge of the truth
and are striving to purify their souls through obedience,
thus doing what they can to prepare for the confl ict, will
fi nd, in the God of truth, a sure defense. “Because thou
hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee”
(verse 10), is the Saviour’s promise. He would sooner send
every angel out of heaven to protect His people than leave
one soul that trusts in Him to be overcome by Satan (Ibid.,
pp. 559, 560).
Men of intelligence are infatuated with Satanic
sorcery as verily today as in the days of Paul. Th ousands
accept the opinion of the minister or obey the injunctions
of the pope or priest, and neglect God’s word and
despise his truth. God would have his people learn their
duty for themselves. Th e Bible declares his will to men,
and it is as much our privilege and our duty to learn that
will as it is that of ministers and popes and priests to learn
it. What they can read from God’s word, we can all read
(Signs of the Times, May 18, 1882).
It is true that spiritualism is now changing its form
and, veiling some of its more objectionable features, it
is assuming a Christian guise. . . .
Even in its present form, so far from being more worthy
of toleration than formerly, it is really a more dangerous,
because a more subtle, deception. While it formerly de13
nounced Christ and the Bible, it now professes to accept
both. But the Bible is interpreted in a manner that is pleasing
to the unrenewed heart, while its solemn and vital
truths are made of no eff ect. Love is dwelt upon as the
chief attribute of God, but it is degraded to a weak sentimentalism,
making little distinction between good and
evil. God’s justice, His denunciations of sin, the requirements
of His holy law, are all kept out of sight. Th e people
are taught to regard the Decalogue as a dead letter. Pleasing,
bewitching fables captivate the senses and lead men to
reject the Bible as the foundation of their faith. Christ is as
verily denied as before; but Satan has so blinded the eyes
of the people that the deception is not discerned (Th e Great
Controversy, pp. 557, 558).
Notice carefully how the quotation above details the subtle
changes in the public face of spiritualism—changes all designed
to create an atmosphere in which false teachers can tear down
God’s law. Notice that Ellen White points out fi ve specifi c aspects
to this veiled form of Satan’s tool. All can now be seen in
modern Christian churches:
1. “Th e Bible is interpreted in a manner that is pleasing to
the unrenewed heart, while its solemn and vital truths
are made of no eff ect.”
2. “Love is dwelt upon as the chief attribute of God, but
it is degraded to a weak sentimentalism, making little
distinction between good and evil.”
3. “God’s justice, His denunciations of sin, the requirements
of His holy law, are all kept out of sight. Th e people are
taught to regard the Decalogue as a dead letter.”
4. “Pleasing, bewitching fables captivate the senses and
lead men to reject the Bible as the foundation of their
faith.”
5. “Christ is . . . denied . . . ,” but the eyes of the people are
blinded so that they don’t see the deception.
Th ese concepts prepare the ground for the last great deception.
Th e line of distinction between professing Christians
and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable. Church
members love what the world loves and are ready to join
with them, and Satan determines to unite them in one
body and thus strengthen his cause by sweeping all
into the ranks of spiritualism. Papists, who boast of
miracles as a certain mark of the true church, will be readily
deceived by this wonder-working power; and Protestants,
having cast away the shield of truth, will also be
deluded. Papists, Protestants, and worldlings will alike accept
the form of godliness without the power, and they
will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion
of the world, and the ushering in of the longexpected
millennium (Th e Great Controversy, pp. 588,
589).
I was directed to this scripture as especially applying
to modern spiritualism: Colossians 2:8: “Beware lest
15
any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit,
after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world,
and not after Christ.”. . .
“Vain deceit” fi lls the minds of poor mortals. Th ey
think there is such power in themselves to accomplish
great works that they realize no necessity of a higher
power. Th eir principles and faith are “after the tradition
of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not
after Christ” (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2,
p. 723).
Jesus has not taught them this philosophy. Nothing of
the kind can be found in His teachings. He did not direct
the minds of poor mortals to themselves, to a power which
they possessed. He was ever directing their minds to God,
the Creator of the universe, as the source of their strength
and wisdom. Special warning is given in verse 18: “Let no
man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility
and worshiping of angels, intruding into those things
which he hath not seen, vainly puff ed up by his fl eshly
mind” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 297).
Inspiration describes other pieces of the end-time puzzle
that help us understand more clearly how “the two great errors”
are established. Jesus prophesied, “Many will turn away
from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets
will appear and will lead many people astray. Sin will be
rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew
24:10–12, NLT).
HIDDEN HERESY
Paul said,
And now, brothers and sisters, let us tell you about the
coming again of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we will be
gathered together to meet him. . . .
For that day will not come until there is a great rebellion
against God and the man of lawlessness is revealed—
the one who brings destruction. He will exalt himself and
defy every god there is and tear down every object of adoration
and worship. He will position himself in the temple
of God, claiming that he himself is God (2 Th essalonians
2:1–4, NLT).
Th e Bible declares that before the coming of the
Lord there will exist a state of religious declension similar
to that in the fi rst centuries. “In the last days perilous
times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural aff ection,
trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fi erce, despisers
of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers
of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness,
but denying the power thereof.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5.
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times
some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils.” 1 Timothy 4:1. Satan will
work “with all power and signs and lying wonders, and
with all deceivableness of unrighteousness.” And all that
“received not the love of the truth, that they might be
17
saved,” will be left to accept “strong delusion, that they
should believe a lie.” 2 Th essalonians 2:9-11. When this
state of ungodliness shall be reached, the same results will
follow as in the fi rst centuries.
Th e wide diversity of belief in the Protestant churches is
regarded by many as decisive proof that no eff ort to secure
a forced uniformity can ever be made. But there has been
for years, in churches of the Protestant faith, a strong and
growing sentiment in favor of a union based upon common
points of doctrine. To secure such a union, the discussion of
subjects upon which all were not agreed—however important
they might be from a Bible standpoint—must necessarily
be waived (Th e Great Controversy, p. 444).
By the pride of human wisdom, by contempt for the
infl uence of the Holy Spirit, and by disrelish for the truths
of God’s word, many who profess to be Christians, and
who feel competent to teach others, will be led to turn
away from the requirements of God. Paul declared to
Timothy, “Th e time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to
themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall
turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned
unto fables.” [2 Timothy 4:3-4.]
Th e apostle does not here refer to the openly irreligious,
but to the professing Christians who make inclination
their guide, and thus become enslaved by self. Such are
willing to listen to those doctrines only that do not
rebuke their sins or condemn their pleasure-loving
course. Th ey are off ended by the plain words of the
faithful servants of Christ and choose teachers who
praise and fl atter them. And among professing ministers
there are those who preach the opinions of men
instead of the word of God. Unfaithful to their trust,
they lead astray those who look to them for spiritual guidance
(Acts of the Apostles, pp. 504, 505).
After describing in graphic detail how society will fall apart
in the end time, Paul adds that the basic reason will be due to
people acting “as if they are religious, but they will reject the
power that could make them godly” (2 Timothy 3:5, NLT).
Peter puts it this way: “I want to remind you that in the last days
there will be scoff ers who will laugh at the truth and do every
evil thing they desire” (2 Peter 3:3, NLT).
Truth or Lies?
Rick Warren's Moral Facade
By Berit Kjos - April 9, 2009
"'Hear this now, O foolish people, without understanding,
who have eyes and see not, and who have ears and hear not:
Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord. ‘Will you not tremble at My presence...?'
But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart;
They have revolted and departed.
They do not say in their heart, 'let us now fear the Lord our God,
Who gives rain... in its season...'" Jeremiah 5:21-24
In an article titled "Rick Warren disavows support for Prop. 8," Jim Brown writes,
"California mega-church pastor and author of The Purpose Driven Life Rick Warren says he apologized to his homosexual friends for making comments in support of California's Proposition 8, and now claims he 'never once even gave an endorsement' of the marriage amendment."[1]
During a recent CNN interview on Larry King Live, Warren assured his host that-
"During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never -- never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop. 8 was going."[2]
But he was lying! According to Brown, Pastor Warren had "issued a clear endorsement of the marriage amendment while speaking to church members." Ponder Warren's stated position two weeks before the Prop. 8 vote on November 4:
"The election's coming just in a couple of weeks, and I hope you're praying about your vote....
"Now let me say this really clearly: we support Proposition 8 -- and if you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8. I never support a candidate, but on moral issues I come out very clear.
"This is one thing, friends, that all politicians tend to agree on. Both Barack Obama and John McCain, I flat-out asked both of them: what is your definition of marriage? And they both said the same thing -- it is the traditional, historic, universal definition of marriage: one man and one woman, for life. And every culture for 5,000 years, and every religion for 5,000 years, has said the definition of marriage is between one man and a woman.
"Now here's an interesting thing. There are about two percent of Americans [who] are homosexual or gay/lesbian people. We should not let two percent of the population determine to change a definition of marriage.... So I urge you to support Proposition 8, and pass that word on. I'm going to be sending out a note to pastors on what I believe about this."[3]
So where does Pastor Warren actually stand on this issue? What is the source of his moral cues? God's Word -- or forceful leaders who have traded His unchanging Truth for today's evolving moral pragmatism?
His recent statements suggest a total moral U-turn. According to Brown, Warren regrets his earlier position. "There were a number of things that were put out. I wrote to all my gay friends -- the leaders that I knew -- and actually apologized to them. That never got out," he admitted.
Those "gay friends" may serve him well in today's global battlefield for fame and power. As America follows Europe into a moral freefall, Warren's spiritual leadership fits right in. So did his attempt to offer a non-offensive interfaith prayer at Obama's inauguration:
"Help us to share, to serve and to seek the common good of all. May all people of goodwill today join together to work for a more just, a more healthy and a more prosperous nation and a peaceful planet. And may we never forget that one day all nations and all people will stand accountable before you...."
I wonder what kind of accountability Warren referred to. It surely wasn't Biblical. Yes, God will hold us accountable -- but to His standard, not to the shifting standards of Warren or Obama, who approve immorality and despise God's Truth. Look at what God says:
"'Woe to the rebellious children,' says the Lord,
'Who take counsel, but not of Me,
And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit,'" Isaiah 30:1
"...the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.... Professing to be wise, they became fools.... Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves.... God gave them up to vile passions. ... And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased [depraved] mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness." Romans 1:18-32
"Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No! They were not at all ashamed; nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
At the time I punish them, they shall be cast down,' says the Lord." Jeremiah 6:15
As American sovereignty fades under the darkening shadows of an anti-Christian world government, few are prepared to stand firm against the forces that are eroding America's Christian foundations. Instead, the vast majority -- whether they identify with Christianity or not -- have dismissed God's Word and warnings. Making His view of sin irrelevant, they have distorted the true gospel of Christ: the "good news" of redemption from the legal judgment that we (sinners) deserve. Apart from that Biblical gospel, the cross and the resurrection become meaningless.
We can't manipulate Truth without facing consequences. We can't justify sin without blinding ourselves and confusing others. And we can't receive new life in Jesus Christ (regeneration) without--
• His merciful (undeserved) grace
• Spirit-given conviction of our sins and our continuing enslavement to sin
• His substitutionary and atoning death on the cross -- taking the punishment of our sin
In the light of that transformational Truth, we see the cross and the resurrection as the center of history. Everything the Old Testament promised pointed forward to the cross. And all the New Testament promises are based on the cross -- and point us to the resurrection and eternal life in Jesus Christ. As He told us,
"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" John 14:6
"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." Matthew 7:13-14
Yet, countless "Christians" have claimed to follow Him -- even as they scorn that narrow gate:
"...he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep." John 10:1-5
"...certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ." Jude 4
"Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock... to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears." Acts 20:28-31
No wonder Paul's warnings were accompanied by tears. Many in his beloved churches were caught up in sensual sins and unholy distractions. Distorting the cross and despising "the narrow road," they ignored the call to die to self and share Christ's suffering.
"The wide road" is well traveled in our times. Popular, amoral, and tolerant of everything but God's Word and way, it is paved with nice-sounding intentions and a feel-good "common ground." But it actually leads to arrogance, hostility, division and destruction. After all, "the whole world lies under sway of the wicked one." John 5:19
What then will we choose? The world's compromising highway and delightful illusions -- for this season of time? Or the narrow way that leads to eternal life with our wonderful Lord for all eternity?
"...many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ; whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame -- who set their mind on earthly things.
"...our citizenship is in heaven from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body...." Philippians 3:18-21
Rick Warren and the 'End Times' Apostasy –
The Bible Reports that Many will 'Fall Away' from True Christianity in the Last Days...
– by Mark Lawrence - June, 2007 - SecretsofSurvival.com –
"Warren's God is not awesome or angry and he does not stand in judgement of human sin. He is genial and mellow and he wants to be your best friend." - The New Yorker, September 12, 2005.
Rick Warren and the 'End Times'
I have found a few things about Rick Warren and his books and programs that ring of 'apostasy', which is the major falling away of Christianity prophesied in the Bible that happens in the 'end times'.
Rick Warren’s thirty million copy bestseller, The Purpose Driven Life, has been preached and is being preached in thousands of pulpits and is said to have replaced the Bible in many thousands of Bible study groups.
Churches around the country are becoming partners with Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in large numbers. Many are teaching (or have taught) his 40 Days of Purpose program to their congregations, and some of these churches are teaching it in place of the Bible.
Sure, Rick Warren may quote scripture over 1200 times in his book, and it may 'glow with love', and it may be a great book for inspiring the mass population to apparently find God, but that does not make it the Bible.
Jesus Christ predicted that in the 'end times' some would take His name and claim to represent Him — but those same people would be deceivers. They would claim to be Christian but would bring a different message and a counterfeit Christianity.
"But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough." (2 Corinthians 11:2-4)
"...Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works". (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)
Is Rick Warren a minister for Satan? He sure doesn't seem like it. In fact, he comes across like your regular guy and he's easy to like.
His book glows with love of God and finding purpose in life by serving God. His book is reported to have brought countless numbers of people to Christ and it's also reported he donates 90% of all income to charities; he's pushing a plan for global peace and he's also working to eradicate HIV/Aids in Africa.
Rick Warren appears to be a God-send.
So, where's the apostasy?
Rick Warren and the 'New Age'
The Purpose Driven Life has sold over 30 million copies, and yet it's surprising that not many seem to be alarmed at his references to New Age teachers, and that he actually quotes them, and actually uses their advice in his book to Christians.
At the top of page 31 in The Purpose Driven Life, he quotes "Dr. Bernie Siegel", a bestselling author and New Age leader; on page 248 he quotes "Aldous Huxley", New Age author who wrote books on the subject of psychedelics and visionary experiences; on page 193 he quotes "Madame Guyon", a French mystic who lived during the 17th and 18th centuries, who's ideas are reported to survive today in the New Age and other non-Christian religions.
Siegel, Huxley, and Madame Guyon
The problem with quoting Siegel, Huxley, and Madame Guyon is that according to the Bible, New Age teachings are Satanic.
Can it get any more clear than that?
The 'New Age' is Satanic, and Rick Warren quotes Satan worshippers.
No matter how enlightened people think the world is today, it does not change the fact that anything 'New Age' is Satanic.
In fact, considering his New Age name-dropping, Rick Warren does not then say anything to condemn the New Age movement, to cover his tracks for having the audacity to quote them in a book aimed at Christians.
That alone is shocking, because many Christians have condemned the New Age movement.
We already know how God feels about the New Age movement. In the Old Testament we're told to stone anyone who practices sorcery or divination or contacts spirits.
So, why is Rick Warren quoting these people?
Why are church pastors across the nation reading his book from the pulpit, and repeating these quotes to their congregations (as must be occuring if they're following his 40 Days of Purpose program as taught in his book)?
Innocent oversight?
I'm not sure how his public relations team missed this one.
What Happened to Fear God?
Throughout The Purpose Driven Life, it's clear that God loves you. God created you for his pleasure. That God smiles when you live your everyday life. That God wants to be your best friend.
But there's a lot more about God, and failing to mention that is like putting a pilot in the driver's seat of a plane with only a half-tank of gas, and an entire ocean to cross.
There is not enough fuel. That plane is not going to make it.
Throughout the Old Testament, God destroys nations that oppose him, and don't follow his commandments. God also punishes his own servants when they fall short of full obedience.
For example, God took Moses' life on Mount Nebo, and only let Moses look at the Promised Land from a distance, because Moses did not uphold holiness among the Israelites.
As another example, God sent a destroying angel to kill over 70,000 Israelites as punishment for an inaccurate census count during the reign of King David.
Also, God has a habit of making people literally drop dead who oppose him; that seems to happen on numerous occasions in the Bible.
The point the Bible makes is that we're supposed to truly fear God. It may sound barbaric to a lot of people, and un-enlightened, however I'm sure there's a reason that God is so stern on that.
The concern shared by those who are against Rick Warren is that his book portrays God as a lot more friendly and a lot more loving than the Bible portrays.
Then when a Christian comes to Christ after reading The Purpose Driven Life, or being taught this kind of doctrine, they don't take sin as seriously as they should.
Why should they take sin seriously? Rick Warren says we're forgiven for our sins (he doesn't say we must now strive to escape sin, and conform to the image of Christ). He says God wants to be our best friend.
At this point, to give a balanced view of the Bible, his book should drive home the reality of Hell and the consequences of disobeying God... but there's barely any mention of Hell.
And it's not described as a Lake of Fire. On page 37, Warren describes Hell as eternal seperation from God.
That's not Hell. That's apostasy.
It has 'New Age' written all over it.
Rick Warren vs. Revelation
Not only is the 'the wrath of God' sorely missing from The Purpose Driven Life along with the blazing fire of Hell, but he even tells us not to fear God.
On page 95 of The Purpose-Driven Life, he writes:
We obey God, not out of duty or fear or compulsion, but because we love him and trust that he knows what is best for us.
On page 228 he writes:
We don't serve God out of guilt or fear or even duty, but out of joy, and deep gratitude for what he's done for us.
On page 232, Rick Warren writes:
The Bible warns believers, "He will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves," but for Christians it will mean a loss of eternal rewards.
What the Bible actually says is essentially this:
Christians who do not measure up to God's demands lose a lot more than eternal rewards - they lose eternal life and go to Hell, where there's 'weeping and gnashing of teeth'.
Revelation is clear on God's demands for Christians of this world. It's also clear that anyone who God pours his anger and wrath on must repent and put God first in their lives, or they will go to the Lake of Fire where they will burn for eternity.
If you read Revelation 2 and 3, it's clear that most Christians (in God's eyes) are not living Christian lives and are still slaves to sin.
The message from the Book of Revelation is clear: Jesus death on the cross is not a free ticket to keep living in sin. As Christians we are supposed to continually work on conforming to the image of Christ.
Rick Warren lowers the bar for salvation all the way across the board and calls it "spiritual maturity".
God raises the bar and calls it "holiness", and according to the Bible, it is an absolute requirement to salvation.
Through sanctification by the Holy Spirit God wants us to escape sin and become purified by the renewing of our mind. We will never be perfect, but we're supposed to try to be perfect.
Matthew 5:48 - Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Now, does a call to stop sinning and turn from wickedness sound harsh? Well, that's not coming from me. God repeatedly says this in Chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation, as a clear warning to all Christians. In fact, if you don't repent, you will face God's wrath.
And if you still don't repent, you will then go to Hell.
Revelation 2:2-5 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Revelation 2:19-23 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Faith without Works is Dead
Essentially, what chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation say is that if you are truly a Christian, then you will truly live, act, think, and love God and neighbor like a Christian should. It's clear that God demands that from us.
Now, God's grace alone saved us. It was nothing we did, accept choosing to believe and accept his free gift of salvation.
But the 'once saved, always saved' concept is false (this will be repeated).
James 2:14-26 - What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?... In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. ...You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
'Lukewarm' Christians are Not Saved
Rick Warren's teachings are set up in such a way to turn faithful Christians into complacent Christians, and we already know what God thinks of complacent Christians. In Revelation 3:16 he calls them 'lukewarm', and then threatens to 'vomit' them out of his mouth.
With God, there is no room for complacency. Jesus said:
Matthew 7:13-14 - "Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it."
In other words, a lot more people go to Hell than go to God's kingdom in Heaven.
Matthew 22:14 - "For many are called, but few are chosen."
If either of these verses were on the front of Rick Warren's book, I don't think it would have sold as many copies.
In fact, if we asked Rick Warren his opinion, based on what's written in The Purpose Driven Life, his answer might be something along the lines of, "Relax, if you're a Christian, you have nothing to worry about."
My reply: If you're a faithful Christian and have put God FIRST in your life, and have truly repented of your sins and been saved, and this now reflects in how you live your life – only then do you have nothing to worry about.
However, if you call yourself a Christian but you have not put the Word of God FIRST in your life, and do not maintain a focused LOVE OF GOD and strive to keep his commandments, as well as to love your neighbor as you love yourself, you are in dangerous territory.
Of course, you'd never know that from reading Warren's book.
You have to read the Bible to figure that out – the entire Bible.
Will Saddleback Church be in the Rapture?
Jesus Christ taught that his coming for his church (the rapture) is imminent and will be like a thief in the night. It could happen at any time.
Revelation 3:3 - Remember therefore what you have received and heard; keep it, and repent. But if you are not alert, I will come like a thief, and you have no idea at what hour I will come against you.
I, like the majority of Christians, believe in a pre-tribulation rapture. The Bible is very clear that Christians who are 'lukewarm' or 'complacent' about their faith are NOT SAVED. If you are not saved, you will not be in the rapture of the church.
Rev. 3:16 - I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
So while the majority of Christians believe in the rapture of the church, the fact that many Christians fall into the category of 'lukewarm' will ensure that they are not in it (in other words, they will be 'left behind').
False Gospel
On page 297 Rick Warren writes:
You have a choice to make. You will be either a world-class Christian or a worldly Christian. Worldly Christians look to God primarily for personal fulfillment. They are saved, but self-centered.
Read that again. According to Rick Warren, there are two types of Christians – and both are saved?
Well, if I believed this I wouldn't have much concern for my salvation - my salvation appears guaranteed. All I have to do is call myself a Christian.
Once saved, always saved.
That is not true for most people. For most people, "Once saved, always saved," is a false gospel, and a false salvation.
In fact, if you read Chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation, God makes it clear to the seven early churches that most of them are NOT SAVED. If they do not repent and put God first in their lives (by loving God with full faith) and profess full love for God and keep his commandments, they will face God's wrath.
(If you disagree, please read Chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation.)
Rick Warren says that 'worldly Christians' are saved. However, Jesus said, "If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you."
There is no such thing as a worldly Christian. That is a dangerous lie.
1 John 2:15-17 - Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
In fact, being a worldly Christian, just by it's definition, means that you are guilty of breaking the Second Commandment: Thou shalt not make any idols. If there is anything in your life, that comes before God, then you have not put God first in your life, and you are essentially guilty of idolatry.
James 4:4 - You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
How to Become a Mega-Church
It's reported that Rick Warren's program to train pastors is aimed at boosting church attendance by catering more to the needs of the population at large, and is reported to advise pastors to preach a lot less of the Bible – which pastors are told the population at large for the most part does not want to hear.
Now, if Rick Warren's book is giving a false portrayal of God (as it seems) and makes God out to be a lot more loving and a lot more friendly than he actually is (according to the Bible) – and if your pastor is teaching Rick Warren's book in your church, your entire congregation may be guilty of breaking the First Commandment...
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Because, if you are reading from a different gospel, you are no longer having fellowship with God.
You are having fellowship with a false God. It is a counterfeit Christianity.
Jesus predicted that many, a great multitude, would claim His name but deny Him by their actions. He said they would "call Me 'Lord, Lord,"' but "not do the things which I say" (Luke 6:46).
Rick Warren's book is part of an alarming trend – it is a book that is being taught from the pulpit and read from in place of the Bible.
From the sound of things, this has been happening all over the country and has even spread to other nations.
Prophecy Fulfilled
Considering the size and scope of Rick Warren's book and that his marketing methods from The Purpose Driven Church have been taught to over 400,000 pastors world wide, the reason he may not concern himself with Bible prophecy (see his comments on page 285 of The Purpose Driven Life) is because he himself is fulfilling Bible prophecy. Warren writes:
When the disciples wanted to talk about prophecy, Jesus quickly switched the conversation to evangelism.
My reply: Rick Warren is lying. Jesus taught indepth on 'End Times' prophecy. In addition to the parables of his coming for the church (commonly called the 'rapture', which he said would come at a day or time no one expects), he also gives a complete 'End Times' break down in Matthew 24 (the entire chapter, in fact).
Maybe one of the reasons Rick Warren avoids Bible prophecy and has told over 30 million people not to worry about it, is this:
The Bible reports that in the end times there will be a major apostasy (falling away) of the Christian church.
There will be false Christs with false gospels...
The New Yorker (Sept. 2005) may have unwittingly said it best:
"Warren's God is not awesome or angry and he does not stand in judgement of human sin. He is genial and mellow and he wants to be your best friend." - The New Yorker, September 12, 2005.
Numerous Accusations, Only One Crime
Rick Warren surrounds himself with talk of God, Jesus, and Scripture - there is no crime there, though many well known Christian authors and pastors have not agreed with his use of Scripture and condemned his book for presenting a sugar-coated Gospel.
Though Rick Warren has been accused of many things, the only crime that appears to have been committed is when a church, even if only temporarily, puts the Bible aside, and teaches solely from The Purpose Driven Life.
This kind of teaching isn't limited to The Purpose Driven Life either. Many mega-church preachers may be guilty of a similar crime – they have stopped teaching the Word of God as it appears in the Bible, and have softened their sermons to appeal to the mass population, talking about the things of this world (for example, prosperity gospel), rather than teaching to deny this world... and live solely for the next.
"If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it." Matthew 16:25
Judgment Day
There may be serious error in teaching that God loves you and wants to be your best friend – because God said Himself that on judgement day He will turn his back on many who claim to know him.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" (Matthew 7:21-23)
In the end, there may be quite a few pastors who have given into temptation... and put the Bible completely aside for a few weeks (40 Days of Purpose) to teach from Rick Warren's book.
"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God." (Exodus 20:4-5)
Hybrid-Bible
One thing you should realize is that after I became a Christian at the beginning of January, one of the visions I received over the coming days was a Bible with a serpent-woman built into a cross on the cover. It was a 'hybrid-Bible' and I was made to fear it.
(To learn about my experience with 'visions', please read my BLOG about how I became a Christian at the beginning of 2007 after a series of unexpected supernatural events.)
So, for those of you who support Rick Warren and think that I am being very critical, now you know why. God filled me with fear of hybrid-Bibles... now, I take that to mean 'false gospel' and I'm very skeptical of all religous text that isn't an actual Bible.
Fear these books. Church pastors, do not teach them from the pulpit. Only teach the Bible. If your church is teaching from any book other than the Bible, you should seriously consider finding a new church. But first, let your pastor know he is in dangerous territory of apostasy, and urge him to return to teaching only the Bible - and the entire Bible at that.
Revelation 3:9 - I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars — I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.
Wow! Thank you very much for this information Bro. Lee... A BIG AMEN to this! My question is why can't we just stick to what we KNOW to be truth.. the Bible, SOP and our well-known Adventist authors... it seems we are always looking to popular non-Adventist theologians for spiritual education when we have the TRUTH at our fingertips... very dangerous, indeed!
