Today’s Manna

Daily Reading for Saturday, August 2, 2014

Scripture: Philippians 4:8.
"Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Meditation:

"If the thoughts are rightly disciplined, it will be a far less difficult task to control the feelings."1
"You may have your choice as to who shall rule your heart and control your mind. If you choose to open the door to the suggestions of the evil one, your mind will be filled with distrust and rebellious questioning. . . .

"Memory's hall should be hung with sacred pictures, with views of Jesus, with lessons of His truth, with revealings of his matchless charms. If memory's hall were thus furnished, we would not look upon our lot as intolerable. We would not talk of the faults of others. Our souls would be full of Jesus and His love. . . .

"Our minds should be educated to dwell upon those things that will glorify God; and if our mental powers are dedicated to God, our talents will improve, and we shall have more and more ability to render to the Master."2

When temptations and trials rush in upon us, let us go to God and agonize with Him in prayer. He will not turn us away empty, but will give us grace and strength to overcome, and to break the power of the enemy.......Early Writings, p. 46.

Scripture: 1 Timothy 5:22
"Keep thyself pure."

"Those who would have that wisdom which is from God, must become fools in the sinful knowledge of this age, in order to be wise. They should shut their eyes, that they may see and learn no evil. They should close their ears, lest they hear that which is evil, and obtain that knowledge which would stain their purity of thoughts and acts. And they should guard their tongues, lest they utter corrupt communications, and guile be found in their mouths.

Loss

My daddy died yesterday, and I miss him so. I though that I was prepared for his death. After all, it was he that taught me to hold on to the blessed hope of the return of our redeemer when all the dead in Christ would be resurrected. So I watched as his life ebbed away, first with failing strength. Until seven years ago I never heard him say "am sick", not even with the flu. Even when they placed a "pacemaker" in his chest I expected that he'd be around for I don't know how long. But today…

1 Corinthians 6:18

Can anyone explain what Paul meant by this text, especially the last part of the verse?
