Church’s view on gays, lesbians adjusted to emphasize ‘compassion’

What do you guys think about this, isn't homosexuality an abomination?

yes

Homosexuality is abomination sir.  Agreed.  .. and in love as always has been, we ought to teach as God taught... encouraging each one of us to forsake our sins including homosexuality and accept God's gift to us...life eternal through faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.

Leviticus

20:13   If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.

Matthew

5:28   But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

1 John

2:15   Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
2:16   For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
2:17   And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

.... but because we seek the world's approval (amongst other), we have these sittings and consultations yielding supposedly friendly statements.

from the article you posted-link above...  I could not help but note amongst other... the following concerns God's servant has there....

The committee leaders said they elected to revise the same-sex union statement to reflect societal trends, such as acknowledging that some governments have given legal standing to same-sex unions.

The institutions of marriage and family are under attack,” declared Willie Oliver, policy committee member and co-director of Family Ministries for the global church, quoting from a line that is now part of the new statement.

The statement also deleted the word “disorder” – calling it outdated – and replaced it with “disturbance” to describe homosexuality. That line in the five-paragraph document now reads: “Homosexuality is a manifestation of the disturbance and brokenness in human inclinations and relations caused by the entrance of sin into the world.”

Sad, sad.  God bless.

Once again I feel that I must say....there is a difference between someone being gay..and someone actually practicing it. The act is the abomination. And it is about time the church showed all sinners compassion instead of throwing them out of the church without trying to help or counsel or seeing where their heads are etc etc etc etc.

We are to be compassionate to one another..and the church needs to treat people with love and compassion...but without condoning sin....they do not need to beat them around the head in condemnation either. Murderers in prison often get treated better than many gays who want to come to church. Murderers get counselled, listened to, helped to overcome the urges that took them to killing someone...so should the church do that for sinners..they have programs for alcoholics and drug addicts and couples having problems...some succeed with the programs, some do not.....that would be the same with gay people....some will really want to listen to God and give away the sin..others will not.

Your last sentence is the most important. Homosexuality is, like all sin, something to be overcome not something to become comfortable with. Whilst the act is an abomination it doesn't not exist in isolation. As with all sin we make a conscious choice whether to sin or not and this is often aided by our approach to the sin itself.

I suggest it is the desire that must be overcome and as long as one identifies with the desire then the sin has not been overcome.

Your example of murderers is an apt one but remember, if the murderer does not want to overcome the desire to murder then all the counselling and courses are meaningless. It is not the knowledge but the application of the knowledge.

John B.,

I'm with you and Alli on this one. I only wish this thread were merged with a similar one posted by Sarah Sulton (it has a few more replies than this).

I'm concerned that the GC chose to water down the original wording of the position on homosexuality. At a time when the sin is on the rise and at a time when the world is increasingly accepting it as normal, it is worrying that the church which is known for her fidelity to the Bible should downgrade sin to mere "disturbance".

Just two questions:

1. How can somebody be a homosexual/gay/sodomite without practising the act?

2. Can somebody be Adventist and be homosexual/gay/sodomite at the same time?

Is your question, "Can somebody be Adventist and be a sinner at the same time?"

You are right Clark P but then again the church is a hospital for sinners.

Under the broad description of "Sodomy" i would think that nearly every couple within the church is "guilty" of it unless we claim that SDA members only have sex with the intent to procreate...

Just thinking about this brings up the thoughts of how far back in time and thinking we are it seems.

Quite sad.

sod·om·y

  [sod-uh-mee]  Show IPA
noun
1.
anal or oral copulation with a member of the opposite sex.
2.
copulation with a member of the same sex.
3.
bestiality  def 4 .
The one about Non-procreative sexual activities is not biblical.

I did not want to pinpoint it down to every sexual activity which might or might not happen in our bedrooms so i used the wide description.

And my point stands as i said it.

Unless you want to tell the tale that SDA couples only have sexual activity within their marriages with only vaginal intercourse...

Sorry but i highly doubt that but i am surely not going to ask the couples in my church what they do in their bedroom.

I honestly don't recall anywhere in the bible where it defines any type of sexual intercourse as sodomy.  I've only seen mankind want to define it that way as a result of what the mob tried to do Lot's visitors.  I'm no Bible expert but the best reference for rules on sexual intercourse I could find was Leviticus18
