This is a very good study on this..."Some while ago an Adventist theologan set about to challenge some details of Adventist history saying there was no basis for the doctrine of the investigative judgement in scripture...In the 1840's a farmer named William Miller began his bible and ran across the text unto two thousand three hundred days and then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.  Daniel 8:14. Miller interpreted the text to mean the cleansing of the earth by fire at the second coming and through careful study of Daniel 8 and 9, began to preach the Lord's soon return on October 22, 1844.   The basis for this date is taken from the starting date for the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem in 457 BC.  Daniel 9:25   Using a day for a year principle in Bible prophecy, this takes us 2300 years to October 22, 1844.  There is much more to this prophecy which predicted when Jesus would come and begin his ministry when he was baptized and his death on the cross.  William Miller began preaching his teachings and the soon return throughout the 1840s up until October 22, 1844.  The day came and the believers anxiously awaited their Lord's return only to be sadly disappointed.  This is known as the great disappointment.  

After the disappointment, careful reexamination of the scriptures was made.  The date was substantiated, but prayer was made as to just what event had taken place.  After the disappointment, Hiram Edson and O.R.L. Crozier met in prayer at Edson's farm to pray for wisdom and understanding.   They had prayer and were walking through a cornfield when Edson received an impression, some have said a vision that the sanctuary was in heaven that was to be cleansed rather than on earth.  It was from this beginning that the doctrine of the investigative judgement in heaven began in 1844 was formulated which is a teaching of the seventh-day adventist church.  

Looking back there are several passages of scripture which support the teaching.  When Daniel received his visions, the angel told him to seal up the book as it was for many days, even unto the time of the end.  Daniel 12:4  It was not until the 1840's when Miller began to study the book of Daniel that it was opened.   Revelation 10 paints a picture of the experience of those who opened the book as sweet as honey in the mouth and the disappointment as bitter in the belly.  The great disappointment was indeed bitter which came after having receiving with joy the message of the cleansing of the sanctuary thought to refer to the 2nd coming of christ.  "And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book.  And he said unto me, Take and eat it up and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey."  Revelation 10:9, 10.
    The teaching of the investigative judgement is that the dead are judged in heaven and their names placed in either the book of life or the book of damnation.  The investigative judgement began in 1844.  The 2300 day prophecy of Daniel is the last time prophecy in the Bible.  Rev 10:5-7 We are living in the time of the feet of iron and clay.  When this process is completed and the names of all are found in either of these two book, Jesus announces behold I come quickly to give every man as his work shall be. Rev 22:11, 12
    Revelation 11 foresees further experiences of the early advent believers when it talks of a great earthquake in verse 13 and  specificly mentions the time when the dead would be judged in verse 18.  "And the nations were angry, and they wrath is come, and the time of the dead that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints ..." Rev 11:18.   In verse 19 is mentioned that the temple is seen in heaven.  "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his ; and there were lightnings and voices, and thundering and an earthquake and great hail.   Rev 11:19.  It was not long after the great disappointment that Ellen White received a vision showing the ark of the covenant in the most holy place of the temple where the ten  are therein between the covering angels with a halo of light over the 4th commandment drawing attention to the seventh day Sabbath.  Early Writings pp 32-35 These texts and others confirm the sanctuary doctrine and investigative judgement from scripture.  https://cottonwoodaz.adventistchurch.org/bible-study--prayer/the-in...

The 2300 day prophecy of Daniel is the last time prophecy in the Bible.

Nice historical account, however this statement, Marion Berry would disagree with.

In the OnSlaught Series, with Walter Veith, a 42 DVD set, about 8 of those was at the end devoted to Marion Berry, a theory concerning the end of time, which is a prophecy timeline, but with no fixed date to human history, until the Sunday Law begins. So it's not a time line, as EGW uses the term. However Daniel 12 is a prophecy, not related to other prophecies in Daniel. There are SOP statements concerning Daniel 12, Marion shows in her DVD. I watched this series way back in 2003 if I remember, memory issues with details. Sorry. She is the only SDA person willing to speak of the end of time. Dave Westbrook in Back to Enoch does also, but focuses on the out of Cities message.

Thousands were led to embrace the truth preached by William Miller, and servants of God were raised up in the spirit and power of Elijah to proclaim the message. Like John, the forerunner of Jesus, those who preached this solemn message felt compelled to lay the axe at the root of the tree, and call upon men to bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance. Their testimony was calculated to arouse and powerfully affect the churches and show their real character. And as the solemn warning to flee from the wrath to come was sounded, many who were united with the churches received the healing message; they saw their backsliding, and with bitter tears of repentance and deep agony of their soul, humbled themselves before God. And as the Spirit of God rested upon them, they helped to sound the cry, “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgement is come.

The preaching of definite time called forth great opposition from many, from the minister in the pulpit down to the most reckless, heaven-daring sinner. “No man knows the day nor the hour,” was heard from the hypocritical minister and the bold scoffers. Neither would be instructed and corrected by those who were pointing to the year when they believed the prophetic periods would run out, and to the signs which showed Christ coming near, even at the doors. Many shepherds of the flock, who professed to love Jesus, said that they had no opposition to the preaching of Christ’s coming, but they objected to the definite time. God’s all-seeing eye read their hearts. They did not love Jesus as much and did not want Him to be near the door.

They knew that their unchristian lives would not stand the test, for they were not walking in the humble path marked out by Him. These false shepherds stood in the way of the work of God. The truth spoken in its convincing power aroused the people, and like the jailer, they began to inquire, “What must I do to be saved?” But these shepherds stepped in between the truth and the people, and preached smooth things to lead them from the truth. They united with Satan and his angels, crying, “Peace, peace,” when there was no peace. Those who loved their ease and were content with their distance from God would not be aroused from their carnal security. God's angels will mark it all; the garments of those unconsecrated shepherds were covered with the blood of souls.

Ministers who would not accept this saving message themselves hindered those who would have received it. The blood of souls is upon them. Preachers and people joined to oppose this message from heaven and to persecute William Miller and those who united with him in the work.

Falsehoods were circulated to injure his influence; and at different times after he had plainly declared the counsel of God, applying cutting truths to the hearts of his hearers, great rage was kindled against him, and as he left the place of meeting, some waylaid him in order to take his life. But angels of God were sent to protect him, and they led him safely away from the angry mob. His work was not yet finished.

God had designed to prove His people. His hand covered over a mistake in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. The Adventists did not discover the error. The time of expectation passed, and Christ did not appear for the deliverance of His people. Those who with sincere faith and love had looked for their Saviour, experienced a bitter disappointment. Yet the purposes of God were being accomplished; He was testing the hearts of those who professed to be waiting for His appearing.

There were among them many who had been actuated by no higher motive than fear. Their profession of faith had not affected their hearts or their lives. When the expected event failed to take place, these persons declared that they were not disappointed; they had never believed that Christ would come. They were among the first to ridicule the sorrow of the true believers. ”Early Writings 233

Did anything special happen in heaven in 1844? Some Seventh-day Adventists, even pastors, are unconvinced that Jesus began a final phase in His high priestly ministry. And I guess the doctrine of the investigative judgement is the most controversial of our doctrines. And no other church shares that doctrine.

The disappointment was bitter when He failed to return as the Millerites had hoped. A careful review of past events focused not so much on the date, which had been so meticulously vetted, but on the meaning of the phrase “then the sanctuary shall be cleansed” (Dan. 8:14). Early Advent pioneers understood this “sanctuary” to be the earth; “cleansing,” then, would refer to the cleansing of the earth by Christ’s return.

Intensive Bible study by these pioneers—and an inspired moment in a cornfield by Hiram Edson a pioneer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, known for introducing the sanctuary doctrine (the investigative judgement) to the church. Hiram Edson a Millerite Adventist, and became a Sabbath-keeping Adventist. Like all Millerites, Edson expected that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ would occur on October 22, 1844. --

This inspired vision revealed the nature of their misunderstanding. The “sanctuary” referred not to the earth itself and is never designated like that in Scripture, but to the only structure in which the services associated with salvation and atonement were to take place, designated in Scripture as the tabernacle, temple, or sanctuary. However, in the case of Daniel 8:14, And he said to me, For two thousand, three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be cleansed. 

This reference is not to the earthly tabernacle originally built according to the plans God gave to Moses and later replaced by The Temple in Jerusalem, but to the sanctuary in heaven. Thus the earthly model was but a type or shadow (Ex. 25:8, And let them make Me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell among them. 40, And see that you make them after their pattern, which was shown you in the mountain. 

In retracing their steps, the pioneers realized a particular aspect they had missed. Revelation 10 discloses that God had known all along that the study of Daniel’s prophecies would lead to great enlightenment. Conversely, its misapplication spelled agony and disappointment. This chapter opens with a mighty angel standing on the sea and the land with a little book in his hand (Rev. 10:1, 2).

As EGW said in the introduction, God had designed to prove His people. His hand covered over a mistake in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. The Adventists did not discover the error. The time of expectation passed, and Christ did not appear for the deliverance of His people. Those who with sincere faith and love had looked for their Saviour experienced a bitter disappointment. Yet the purposes of God were being accomplished; He was testing the hearts of those who professed to be waiting for His appearing.

William. Miller said this “I have fixed my mind upon another time, and here I mean to stand until God gives me more light. And that is Today, Today, and Today until He comes, and I see Him whom my soul yearns.”

Thanks, Rob I thought I add what I knew on the subject. I have always been wondering how come William Miller missed Rev 10 as it plainly tells us that the 1844 message is not the end of the world. And I came across that statement from EGW and I was satisfied that it was the meaning of God to test his people, and as we can see was facing plenty of scoffing. This should be a lesson for us as we now are on the threshold of eternity.

My question is why didn't Miller ask Jesus is this was truth directly, and listen to the still small voice?

Do we often do things in our own power? Using self?

The Bible Revelation says ye must preach again, so there is a lesson here.

Yes indeed Rob that is true and perhaps Miller was a man of action more than a man of prayer. But then again as EGW says "God's hand covered over the mistake" to prove His people. I for one is satisfied with that answer.
