When the church comes to a cross-road, and asks, "which way shall we go", the Bible answer is "ask for the old paths" (Jer 6:16). The old way, the way it was "in the beginning", is the best.

Among old-school people I don't think drums will ever be acceptable during Sabbath worship.  Music is a powerful tool -- of course it can steer attitude and emotion very easily. But today music is so often used to convert the church to the world, more than the other way around. Drums, I'm sorry to say Ritchie, are important in modern music, basically for the same reason that they were important in the old pagan religions.

Ellen white wrote that we Should not oppose instruments, this includes drums. she never attacked any instrument! let us be careful what quote we take to defend our own preference.

What is the quote, I cant find what you are speaking of, and we see the destructive power of music especially once the drums come into a church.

she was against drums but supported other conventional instruments

So you say, need to see the SOP quotes,,

The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, [THESE COMMENTS WERE MADE IN CONNECTION WITH THE "HOLY FLESH" MOVEMENT AT THE INDIANA CAMP MEETING OF 1900. FOR FURTHER DETAILS, SEE SELECTED MESSAGES, BOOK 2, PP. 31-39.] the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. . . .  {LDE 159.1}
     A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din and noise to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit's working. . . . Those things which have been in the past will be in the future. Satan will make music a snare by the way in which it is conducted.--2SM 36, 38 (1900).  {LDE 159.2}
     Let us give no place to strange exercisings, which really take the mind away from the deep movings of the Holy Spirit. God's work is ever characterized by calmness and dignity.--2SM 42 (1908).  {LDE 159.3}

Again let us be consistent when we are quoting the Bible or EGW.

There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing here is a so call anti drum quote from EGW.  This verse is used to prohibit Drums, Shouting and Dancing but somehow MUSIC is not prohibited by this text it seems.  I am so confused why do we still have music if this quote prohibit music, drums and dancing, why do we still have music in church?

Greetings Charlie,

This quote from Ellen White is one of the most quoted verse people use to justify the Non-Use of drums. I cover this quote indepth in my newest book entitled The Great Controversy In Worship and Music coming this summer. For now I will say the following. If drums was wrong just because she mentioned that in that quote, then shouting, music, dancing would be also wrong too and we do those ! Ofcourse there are guidelines and principles for the use of instruments. We need to be reeducated to give a proper response. It would be a contradition if she wrote We should not Oppose the use of instruments and then say do not use drums! Or, it would have been clearer if she wrote we should not oppose the use of instruments except the drums. God bless greetings Kevin

Was there à time they weren't? And if So why?

you are speaking the truth brother: these day we are baptising too many worldly persons; persons who are not yet converted. instead of us influencing them they are influencing us, they bring all their garbage into church and instead of them being saved from sin they want to be saved in sin.

And furthermore:

One fine night, they leave the pool hall,
Headin' for the dance at the Arm'ry!
Libertine men and Scarlet women!
And Rag-time, shameless music
That'll grab your son and your daughter
With the arms of a jungle animal instink!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground!

Hi Jim, you give an excellent point, on what I believe, the church needs to work on. The vision we get from scripture and the inspired writings from ellen white is that in heaven and in God's preference Music is something done by all. This does not mean ofcourse that 1 person or a few cannot sing something but music there is done by a multitude of creatures and sadly to say but we have indeed drifted away to only solo's and few choirs out there. This opens a floodgate of all kinds of problems. Good point.
