Why did Jesus disciples not understand what was happening to Jesus at the time of His death? Had they not read the prophecies?
Great Controversy, p. 594. "Before His crucifixion the Saviour explained to His disciples that He was to be put to death and to rise again from the tomb, and angels were present to impress His words on minds and hearts. But the disciples were looking for temporal deliverance from the Roman yoke, and they could not tolerate the thought that He in whom all their hopes centered should suffer an ignominious death. The words which they needed to remember were banished from their minds; and when the time of trial came, it found them unprepared. The death of Jesus as fully destroyed their hopes as if He had not forewarned them. So in the prophecies the future is opened before us as plainly as it was opened to the disciples by the words of Christ. The events connected with the close of probation and the work of preparation for the time of trouble, are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more understanding of these important truths than if they had never been revealed.”
When does probation for humanity? At the coming of Jesus, before the coming of Jesus, or after the coming of Jesus? All three of those things are being taught in the world today. They cannot all be correct. Do you know which one is true? Would it make any difference? Remember, in knowing the time we know what to do. Does the time of trouble as spoken of here come before the coming of Jesus or after the coming of Jesus? Does it come before the close of probation or after the close of probation? All those different positions are being taught by various ones in the world today, and all claim to teach it out of the Bible. They can't all be right. Do you know which one of those is true? Do you know how to prove it?
What does Jesus say about the importance of understanding the book of Daniel? (Read Matthew 24:15, 16.) It becomes even clearer when we read the account in Luke 21:20, 21.
The Roman armies under Cestius came against Jerusalem nearly forty years after Jesus spoke these words. But just at the moment when it seemed that the Jews must surrender, Cestius, for no reason in the world, started a retreat to the sea. The Christians who remembered Jesus’ words took the opportunity to leave the city. Others might have said, “Why leave, the armies are leaving?” But, it was not long before the Roman army under Titus came back. This time it came quickly by forced marches. A great army was thrown around the city. And before that siege was over one million Jews perished by crucifixion, by starvation, by inner conflicts within the city, and by many other ways. And remember that in the fate of that city we may behold the doom of the world. But not one Christian perished in the siege of that city. And not one of God's children upon whom is the seal of God is going to perish in the doom of this world. Not one. Why? Because they know the time and watch the prophetic signals, and they move under the leadership of Jesus. I say we need to know the time. We need to know the signals. We need to know what is coming to pass right down here today.
As far as dates are concerned, we left the last date a hundred years ago in 1844. Then the angel took his place, one foot on the land and one foot on the sea, and with his right hand to heaven swore that there should be prophetic time no longer (see Revelation 10:6). There is no date after 1844. Why? Because God's prophetic clock had struck the hour of the last things, the final movements. And from 1844 on it is not a matter of days or weeks or months or years. Rather it is a development of that people. And when that people are developed, when those characters are perfected, then the crisis at the close breaks with all the force of a great hurricane or tornado. The final movements come just as soon as those people are developed.
There is something which is about to take place which inspiration says is to be to us a sign just as definite and clear and plain as the Roman armies coming around Jerusalem was. All around us multitudes are keeping track of current events while they are oblivious to the prophecies. Let us know our Bibles – let us study Daniel and Revelation.
Final Thoughts: How many messages are there in Revelation 14? Three. Why? To perform a mighty work in God’s people to prepare them for Jesus Coming.
There is only one thing that can cleanse the sanctuary (both in heaven and on earth) – Jesus blood. (Read Hebrews 9:22). This is the everlasting gospel message! Knowing the time, it is time for us to wake out of sleep and hasten to get that work done. Knowing the time we know we have little time left in which to prepare. Knowing the time we shall want to be quick in our movements, for the angel says, Step fast. So I trust that the Spirit of God may speak to our hearts right now if sin is discovered by the searchlight of the Spirit in the heart. Let us put it away and claim the covering blood of Jesus, that we may be under the shadow of the Almighty, protected by the covering righteousness of Jesus.
There are a lot of questions you raise Tiones. I will try and answer them.
First you asked why the disciples did not understand what was happening around the time of Jesus' death. There was a common misconception around that time not just by the disciples but by many of the Jewish people and leaders regarding what Jesus was going to do when he came as Messiah. Unfortunately many got the prophecies regarding his 2nd coming mixed up with the prophecies of his 1st coming. Many thought that He was coming as a conquering King two years ago to free the Jewish nation from the Roman rule. Because the sacrificial system became just a ritual they forgot what it was supposed to be leading to.
You also asked about when probation closes. We are not given an exact date but the Bible does teach that the tim of probation closes shortly before Jesus returns the second time. It signals the end of the pre-Advent judgement prior to the second coming of Jesus which determines who will be saved and who will not be saved. It is signified by Jesus saying, "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still." Rev 22:11. It is after that that the time of trouble will come upon the earth and the 7 last plagues will happens.
